ATLANTA -- The Braves have placed reliever Luis Ayala on the 15-day disabled list as he deals with an anxiety disorder, the team announced Tuesday evening. Ayala, who the organization traded for earlier this month in a deal with the Orioles, has no history of anxiety issues, but general manager Frank Wren said its a reaction to the news that the 35-year-old was recently diagnosed with high blood pressure. "With that high blood pressure he just didn't feel well," Wren said. "(He) went to the emergency room in Colorado, was checked, went back on the next day and I think he started getting very anxious about just the way he was feeling and wasn't able to see a lot of relief." Ayala took the mound against the Rockies last week while feeling the effects of the high blood pressure, but Wren called that the "last straw." The Braves (16-9) flew Ayala home soon after. He did not make the trip with the team to Detroit. Ayala has been put on high blood pressure medication by Braves doctors. By putting the veteran on the 15-day DL, Wren and the organization are hoping it gives him time to get accustommed to the medicine, and that by regulating his blood pressure his anxiety will decrease. Wren was adament that though it is an "unusual" situation, there are no serious repercussions foreseen. "He actually said he's hopeful now they'll get to the bottom if it," Wren said. "It's just going to be a day-to-day thing, see how he feels to the point where he gets comfortable back on the mound." Wren said once Ayala's blood pressure and anxiety are back to healthy levels, the organization plans to assign him to injury rehab in the minors. Ayala is 0-1 with a 3.86 ERA in five appearances this season.
