The Atlanta Braves signed veteran third baseman Wes Helms to a minor league contract on Wednesday. Helms returns to the Peach State after being drafted by the Braves in 1994. The 35-year-old Helms also spent parts of four seasons with Atlanta. He struggled this season with the Florida Marlins, batting .191 with six RBIs in 69 games. Helms was released last Saturday. Helms will report to Triple-A Gwinnett this weekend and likely rejoin the Braves when the rosters are expanded on Sept. 1.
