The Atlanta Braves shut out the Phillies, 5-0 on Friday. KENDRICK SUPERB Kyle Kendrick was surprisingly lights out.  The right-hander pitched seven shutout innings.  He only surrendered four hits, and walked one.  He struck out five. Unfortunately for Kendrick, Hudson was just as good, tossing seven scoreless innings.  The Phillies only managed four hits and a walk against Hudson.  Hudson earned his seventh victory of the season. MCCANN PROVIDES THE BLAST In the eighth inning, Charlie Manuel decided to pull Kendrick before the inning started.  Antonio Bastardo immediately found himself in a bases-loaded jam.  With two outs and a 1-2 count to Chipper Jones, it looked as if Bastardo would escape the inning untouched.  Jones worked a walk to bring in a run, and give the Braves a 1-0 lead.  Brian McCann followed with a grand slam to center field.  The Braves went up 5-0, and didn’t look back. HOWARD RETURNS Before Dan Baker could announce his name, Howard stepped into the batter’s box ...

Philadelphia Phillies: 2012 ERA for the MLB 5 at game 85

Kyle Kendrick of the Philadelphia Phillies is an emergency option.  How do the fill-ins for the Yankees match-up with the locals?  The Apocalyptic Horsemen Stats are in my recent coverage linked below. TAL’S HANDY STATS   WELCOME, NEWCOMERS: I am alternating a game-day 2012 ERA For The NL East and a 2012 ERA For The MLB 5. See link section below. In each publication, the number...

Howard will be eased back into Phillies' lineup

After his first night back in the major leagues after suffering a ruptured left Achilles tendon in last year's National League playoffs, Ryan Howard looked out at the bevy of reporters that surrounded him. He was eventually asked about how much of the load he could shoulder for a Philadelphia Phillies team on the brink of collapse. "Nothing more than this bookbag on...

Phillies activate Ryan Howard from DL

The time for excuses is coming to a close. Chase Utley came off of the DL last week, and today, the Phillies have activated first baseman Ryan Howard. Howard torn his Achilles tendon last October in game five of the NLDS against the Cardinals, and played six rehab games, tallying eight hits, two doubles, one homer, three walks, and three strikeouts.  The Phillies...

Two Men Can't Fix Bad.... But One Better...

From the Phillies Facebook, yesterday Chase Utley returns, and in his very first at-bat, homers. Ryan Howard returns, and in his very first at-bat, doubles. In that time, the Phillies have gone 1-8. They lost the first five games with Chase Utley. They're 0-1 with Howard. And neither has been too bad. The truth is, this team is way more than one or two pieces away...

Losses Keep Piling Up

Another night, another loss. It’s a familiar story in Philadelphia these days. This time, the Phillies lost 6-3 in front of a lifeless home crowd that had mostly retreated by the time the final out was recorded. Looking back at the Phillies’ history since moving to Citizens Bank Park, this final series before the All Star Break has to be absolute rock bottom. They’ve now...

Assessing the Moves Amaro Didn’t Make

I love trade talk and speculation. My favorite point of the baseball season has been the run-up to the trade deadline and, for Phillies fans, it has been amongst the most exciting in recent years. Ryan and Corey have drawn their lines in the sand about where to stand with Cole Hamels: Corey says it’s imperative to trade Hamels, Ryan to stand pat. Either way, I love reading the...

McCann's slam powers Braves over Phillies

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Brian McCann hit a grand slam, Tim Hudson tossed four-hit ball over seven innings and the Atlanta Braves beat the Philadelphia Phillies 5-0 to spoil Ryan Howard's season debut Friday night. Howard doubled in his first at-bat and was 2 for 4 in his first game since rupturing his left Achilles tendon on the final swing in a postseason elimination loss to St...

Phillies Drop Another Game to the Braves, 6-3

Amidst a stretch of games played against the National League East, the Phillies' woes grew worse tonight in the second game of this three-game series against Tommy Hanson and the Braves.  Brian McCann, coming off a big night, went deep again in the top of the second to put up the first run of the game.  The Phillies rallied in the bottom of the second to put up a three...

Game Day Pictures: Braves vs Cubs 7-2-12

Kolbi likes to sit here. And she likes to swipe my camera. No complaints.   Kolbi really likes sitting out here by the bullpen, "in their laps," she says. It does feel really close, but since most of them don't sit on the bench for the whole game anymore it's not a huge deal. I went early and took BP pictures, as usual. Would it kill these boys to smile now and...

Papelbon Rocked, Phils Lose Series Finale

Final: Phillies 5, Mets 6. WP: Bobby Parnell (2-1, 2.91 ERA) LP: Jonathan Papelbon (2-3, 3.45 ERA) In order for the Philadelphia Phillies to climb out of the hole in the standings that they have dug themselves into, they must start to win as many series as possible in the final remaining months of the season. Tonight, unfortunately, they were not able to do just that.   Cole Hamels...

Gameday: Phillies (37-46) at Mets (44-38)

Philadelphia Phillies (37-46) vs. New York Mets (44-38) Cole Hamels (10-4, 3.08) vs. R.A. Dickey  (12-1, 2.15) Time: 7:10, Citi Field TV: CSN Weather: Sunny, 92 Media: Twitter and Facebook Cole Hamels has been the center of several rumors lately.  You have to wonder if these next few starts are his last in a Phillies uniform.  All Cole can do is go out there and try to get...

Amid Trade Rumors, Cole Hamels Takes on R.A. Dickey as Phillies, Mets Close Series

Since Cole Hamels last took the mound and was a hard-luck loser to Mark Buehrle and the Miami Marlins, the Phillies have one just once, and trade rumors have swirled around the 28 year-old lefthander.   In 2012 Hamels is currently 10-4 with a 3.08 ERA and will be representing the Phillies in the National League for the annual All-Star game on Tuesday in Kansas City.  This will...

Reds among others showing interest in Juan Pierre

The Phillies are closing in on an “everything must go” sale as they again lost on Friday and are now 13 games back of the first place Washington Nationals. Though the team is not ready just yet to waive the white flag, teams are beginning to call about available players. Buster Olney notes that the Reds among other teams have called about Juan Pierre. With the various injuries...
