Dom D's Mets Fan Blog:
Billy Wagner will undergo surgery this week on his left elbow and will miss a year, a Mets official confirmed early Monday afternoon.
An MRI exam taken Monday revealed that Wagner has suffered a torn MCL in his left elbow, requiring surgery.
Wagner, 37, had 27 saves and a 2.30 ERA for the Mets this season, but went on the disabled list on Aug. 5 with left elbow inflammation. The Mets originally expected him to return this week, but Wagner had to cut short a simulated game Sunday after feeling discomfort in the elbow.
Scheduled to throw roughly 20 pitches between halves of Sunday's doubleheader against the Phillies, Wagner ended the session after throwing an errant breaking ball and feeling what general manager Omar Minaya described as "discomfort" in his left elbow. He stalked off the mound, mouthing "I'm done" to the group of coaches assembled behind home plate.
Recently acquired Luis Ayala has been closing games in Wagner's absence. Ayala is 5-for-6 in save opportunities and the Mets are 22-11 since Wagner was hurt.
He has one year remaining, at $10.5 million, on his four-year contract with the Mets. The team has an $8 million option for 2010 with a $1 million buyout.
