MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Pirates ace Francisco Liriano lasted only three innings and the Milwaukee Brewers pounded out a 9-3 victory Wednesday night to delay Pittsburgh from clinching its first winning season since 1992. Liriano (15-7), who had allowed five earned runs in his previous four starts, was rocked for seven runs on seven hits, with two walks and two costly wild pitches. The Pirates, aiming for their 82nd victory, twice left the bases loaded and stranded 12 runners. The Brewers tagged Liriano for five runs on five hits in the third inning to open a 7-2 lead. Peralta (9-14) allowed three runs on nine hits in six innings, striking out six and walking one. Pirates All-Star Jason Grilli, who had been sidelined with a right forearm strain, pitched the eighth for his first appearance since July 22.

Brewers jump on Liriano to avoid second straight sweep

MILWAUKEE -- With a couple of regulars out of the lineup, the Milwaukee Brewers makeshift lineup Wednesday night seemed destined to fall victim to Pittsburgh's red-hot lefty Francisco Liriano. But as the funny game of baseball would have it, the Brewers pounced on Liriano for seven runs in three innings and rolled to a 9-3 victory, snapping a five-game losing streak and preventing...

The curse of the Pittsburgh Pirates is dead

Ok. There wasn’t an official curse, probably because nobody wanted to give a struggling small market team anything besides the high-hat. The Pittsburgh Pirates recorded win number 81 on September 3, 2013 and will not suffer another losing season for the first time in 21 years. If there were such a hex I would call it The Curse of Barry Bonds, maybe I will coin that name if it...

On Monday, Pittsburgh Pirates closer Jason Grilli made a rehab appearance for the team’s Double-A outfit, the Altoona Curve. Grilli, on the disabled list since suffering a right forearm injury all the way back on July 22, reportedly is nearing a return to the big league ball club. Exactly what role Grilli will fill […]The post Jason Grilli holds autograph session following minor...

Every Pirates Player With Barry Bonds' Dangly Gold Cross Earring

Last night, something special happened. Our Pittsburgh Pirates won their 81st game of the season, a number that tradionally means your club has reached mediocrity in a 162-game season. Only the Pirates haven't hit that many wins wince 1992, a season that ended in crushing disappointment as Sid Bream beat a Barry Bonds throw home in the NLCS. And every season since has been filled...

Jean Segura out Wednesday due to illness

MILWAUKEE -- Milwaukee Brewers All-Star shortstop Jean Segura is out of the lineup Wednesday due to an illness. Segura came to the ballpark not feeling well, and Brewers manager Ron Roenicke elected to give him the day off. Roenicke planned on giving the 23-year-old a day off during the Chicago series this weekend, but the illness bumped things up. "I thought later on made more...

Huntington’s Deals Indicative of Focus Beyond 81 Wins

The streak is over. It ended Tuesday with a bang, after Travis Snider’s pinch-hit, go-ahead home run in the ninth inning. Now, Pirates fans can focus on more significant items on the agenda as the Pirates play out their final 23 games of the 2013 regular season. The most significant item on said agenda is a deep playoff run. Success for the Pirates has started from the top, and...

Pirates activate Jason Grilli from disabled list

In a surprising move the Pirates activated closer Jason Grilli from the disabled list Tuesday. Grilli originally was scheduled to make a rehab appearance for Triple-A Indianapolis on Wednesday. Grilli threw a scoreless inning for Double-A Altoona on Monday. Pirates manager Clint Hurdle declined to say whether Grilli would immediately resume closer duties upon his return when asked...

Braun Calls Season Ticket Holders To Apologize

I thought you might find this interesting. According to CBS 58, suspended Milwaukee Brewers Outfielder Ryan Braun is calling Brewers season ticket holders to apologize. “Hey there’s a guy on the phone claiming to be Ryan Braun, it’s probably one of your buddies messing with you.” That’s exactly what Kelly’s Bleachers owner Pat Guenther thought Thursday afternoon. He picked...

Minor League Schedule: Rodriguez and Taillon Attempt to Keep Indianapolis in Playoffs

The minor league season is done for all but three of the Pittsburgh Pirates affiliates. Indianapolis lost game two last night, putting them one loss away from being eliminated from the playoffs. West Virginia lost game one on Wednesday, then had off yesterday. They are also facing a must win game today. Jamestown won the NYPL Wildcard spot and will go up against the Pirates affiliate...

Zack Greinke trade continues to pay off for Brewers

MILWAUKEE -- It's a trade that will be talked about in Milwaukee for years to come. Unfortunately for the Los Angeles Angels, they will hear about each time Jean Segura's name is thrown around. Just over a year after the Brewers and Angels agreed on a blockbuster trade sending right-hander Zack Greinke to Los Angeles for Segura and right-handers Johnny Hellweg and Ariel...

Gennett, Davis among young Brewers hoping to stick

(Eds: Updates.) By GENARO C. ARMAS AP Sports Writer Coaches can be fond of reminding players about how adversity creates opportunity. For the Brewers this year, there has been plenty of both. Ryan Braun caught a lot of flak for that statement he released that was supposed to be an apology for his PED use, but really wasn’t an apology. According to CBS 58 in Milwaukee, Braun has been calling season ticket holders to apologize for his PED use. And apparently...
