It took just four pitches for Zack Greinke's Saturday start against the Houston Astros to come to a very premature end. After Greinke spiked a ball out of frustration following a close call at first base, the Milwaukee Brewers' ace pitcher was ejected before even registering an out. Having given up an earned run, he took the loss as Milwaukee was eventually defeated, 6-3. So on Sunday, the Brewers will start Greinke for a second time in two days the second time a pitcher has performed that rare feat this season. On May 12, the Angels C.J. Wilson became the first pitcher to start back-to-back games in 10 years when an early rain delay shut him down after 22 pitches. Greinke will replace Brewers pitcher Marco Estrada, who was scheduled to start Sunday's game. Known for his intense pregame preparation, Greinke was nevertheless in favor of starting a second straight game when asked about it after Saturday's start, his shortest by far of his career. "It'd be a shame to completely waste a day I should be pitching," Greinke told reporters. At the time, Brewers manager Ron Roenicke was unsure of whether the team would make the unusual decision to start its best pitcher on back-to-back days. But on Sunday, the team decided a four-pitch outing wasn't enough to keep Greinke who has a 9-3 record and 3.17 ERA from returning to the mound less than 24 hours later. Given that Milwaukee will have four days off after Sunday for the All-Star break, it's possible Greinke could start a third straight game Friday if Roenicke decides to reset his rotation at the break particularly given that the Brewers are trying to do all they can to get back into the NL Central race before they must decide whether to deal Greinke before the July 31 trading deadline. Earlier this season, Wilson threw a 5.2 inning no-decision in his second start, a game the Angels eventually won. Prior to Wilson achieving the rare feat, former Rangers right-hander Aaron Myette started two days in a row in 2002 for a similar reason to Greinke's. He threw just two pitches before being ejected in a game against Baltimore. Follow Ryan Kartje on Twitter.
