No, they didn’t get tanked like last years Boston Red Sox team, but they did fail to try their best in order to win games at the end of the 2010 season. That’s exactly what the team GM said:

“I’m not taking away from Tampa Bay, but we didn’t try to win the division,” Cashman said. “We tried to line ourselves up for the playoffs and that worked. “The division title was rendered meaningless the way the set-up was. It really meant nothing more than a T-shirt and a hat.”

WHOA! Okay, seriously now. That is kinda what the Yankees should have done once they were in that position. This isn’t like football where the offense needs to keep their rhythm and timing down. The most important thing in baseball is having your pitchers rested, and giving up an extra-home game is worth that shot. It worked out in for the Yankees as well. They ended up with a much more favorable matchup for the Divisional Round, going up against the Twins. The Yanks swept them, and ended up in the ALCS for the second year in a row.

This line by Cashman just helps solidify why Bud Selig wants to add that additional Wild Card team to the playoff mix. It will force teams to finish out their season, rather than think they can just idle down with the playoff spot secured. The new rule still sucks, because more teams in the playoffs isn’t a need in baseball. It just opens the door for further expansion down the road, and I could completely see the 162 game season being shortened to accommodate that.

Baseball has more champions than any other sport. Let the NBA and NHL let half their league in to just lose to the same 9 teams every 10 years.

New York Yankees: Cashman you are losing it again

No, no…. the Yankees need a lefty to aid Boone Logan out of the bullpen, and even more so now that LHR Hideki Okajima failed his physical a few days ago. Even Yankee’s GM, Brian Cashman, Is Talking About Jeremy Lin

Joe Girardi says the Yankees did not concede the A.L. East in 2010

Joe Girardi and Brian Cashman have differing opinions about how the Yankees season ended in 2010. Once they clinched the A.L. Wild Card spot, New York played their best players sparingly. Many people thought that was the smart thing to do, while others believed they should have continued to challenge the Rays for the A.L. East title. Earlier in the week, Cashman admitted the Yankees...

Eric Chavez You Look Hot In Yankees Pinstripes

Finally, the New York Yankees GM Brian Cashman resigned ex-Athletics hottie Eric Chavez. E. Chavez as an Oakland A Image via Wikipedia It is mind-boggling that this took so long, especially after reading a mid-January post on MLB Trade Rumors that there were a number of teams interested in him. Yankees discussed a 3-year extension with Russell Martin

At the end of last season, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman made it obvious that he is a fan of Russell Martin, calling him Thurman Munson-like. So it shouldn’t come as much of shock to hear that the Yankees briefly talked about a three-year extension with the catcher. “My agent and the Yankees talked a little bit about an extension,” Martin told Chad Jennings of...

Yankees Roll The Dice With David Aardsma

With their offseason shopping essentially complete, the Yankees splurged for one more reliever earlier this week, signing David Aardsma to a one-year contract with a club option for 2012. The terms are hilariously team friendly, as the right-hander will make just $500,000 in 2012 with another $500,000 in available incentives. The option is also worth $500,000 as well, and any incentives...
