Yes, you’ve heard this one before in the past week already, but Mike Wilner of the FAN 590 said it best in 140 characters: Kimball’d indeed. Jeroloman, a minor league catching prospect in the Blue Jays farm, was claimed by the Pittsburgh Pirates earlier this week when the Blue Jays tried to put him through waivers instead of having him take up a 40-man spot. Clearly, the club liked him enough to claim him back when the Pirates tried to do the same, and it looks as though the 40-man roster is where Jeroloman will stay for now. Not that he’s done much to earn it – the 26-year old has been a career minor-leaguer thus far, and hit just .240/.335 with 2 home runs over 76 games in AAA LAs Vegas last season. Perhaps this is purely a precautionary move to provide JPA with some backup in case Molina does end up leaving, and the team is unable to acquire a backup right away. D’Arnaud is next in line on the depth chart, but Anthopoulous has said that Travis will ...

Pirates Offer Arbitration to Derrek Lee

The Pittsburgh Pirates have offered arbitration to free agent first baseman Derrek Lee, and have declined arbitration offers to catcher Chris Snyder and outfielder Ryan Ludwick. If Lee accepts arbitration, the Pirates will have him under contract for the 2012 season, with his arbitration price likely being a raise over his $8.5 M total compensation in 2011.  If he declines, the...

Deadline For Arbitration to Ranked Free Agents Is Today

The Pirates will likely tender an offer of arbitration to Derrek Lee today. The new collective bargaining agreement will eliminate Type A and Type B free agents next year.  Fortunately for the Pittsburgh Pirates, the system is still in place this year, as they have four Type B free agents, with the potential to get a few first round compensation picks in the 2012 MLB draft. In order...

Blue Jays re-acquire Jeroloman from Bucs

The new CBA is not kind to the Pirates

MLB announced its new CBA (Collective Bargaining Agreement) on Tuesday. While you’ll hear from officials about how great it is that baseball won’t have labor issues like the NBA or NFL…there won’t be much celebration coming from Pittsburgh. The main talking point is the draft, and penalties that MLB is implementing for teams that spend heavily in the draft...

2011 Pirates Redux – Catcher Edition

Alright so this one should be pretty easy as the Buccos have really addressed this position. The Pirates lost Ryan Doumit and it looks pretty unlikely that Chris Snyder will be back.  Those two were supposed to be the catching tandem last season. Doumit had a good season, when he played.  The oft-injured backstop (somewhat) [...]
