The Detroit Tigers finally know their opponent for the American League Division Series. It's the Oakland Athletics, who recently visited Comerica Park, Sept. 18-20. The Tigers took two of three games in that series. Earlier in the season, May 10-14, the two teams split a four-game series in Oakland. The Athletics secured the AL West title with a 12-5 victory over the Texas Rangers on Wednesday afternoon. The Tigers clinched their second straight AL Central championship with a 6-3 victory at Kansas City on Monday. The ALDS opens Saturday evening (6:07 p.m. first pitch) at Comerica Park. Justin Verlander will be on the mound for the Tigers. The matchup became official when the Baltimore Orioles fell to the Tampa Rays, 4-1, Wednesday night. The loss made the New York Yankees the AL East champs. They will open the playoffs against the winner of Friday's wild-card game between the Rangers and the Orioles. All Tigers postseason games will feature Tigers LIVE pre- and postgame shows on FOX Sports Detroit.

To commemorate Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera winning the elusive Triple Crown, Major League Baseball is selling "Authenticated Batter Box Dirt."

Max Scherzer Hurts Ankle in Tigers' Celebration, Jim Leyland Claims Injury Isn't 'Serious-Serious'

The Detroit Tigers have the talent to make some real noise once the playoffs start this weekend despite underachieving for much of the season. Much of that success, however, will hinge on whether or not they get a healthy Max Scherzer for October. The big right-hander has battled injuries throughout the season, and naturally, he was bitten by the injury bug yet again on Monday night...

Athletics Injury News: Brandon McCarthy, Brett Anderson

It was clear that the Oakland Athletics would be getting left-hander Brett Anderson back for the playoffs, but the team announced yesterday that right-hander Brandon McCarthy might also be able to pitch this postseason if the team makes a deep run. "At this point, nothing is impossible," McCarthy said, adding that it may take the A's reaching the World Series in...

MLB is willing to profit off Miguel Cabrera’s Triple Crown

Have you ever watched the pawn shows on TV where someone comes in and tries to pawn dirt? They typically claim it is from Ebbets Field, or the old Yankee Stadium, hoping to make a few bucks. Of course, there is no way to authenticate dirt, unless you are willing to pay $39.99. But it [...]

Athletics 3, Rangers 1

Travis Blackley allowed one run over six innings in a strong bounce-back performance that helped the Oakland Athletics move into a first-place tie in the AL West with Texas and set up a one-game showdown for the division title with a 3-1 victory over the Rangers on Tuesday night. A night after holding a raucous celebration after clinching their first playoff berth since 2006, the...

A’s Should Also Skip the Starter

A few weeks ago, I advocated for a wild card play-in game strategy that involved beginning the game with a reliever and relying heavily on a team’s bullpen to get them through. In that scenario, we used the Atlanta Braves as the example of how it could work. Well, we’re not yet to the wild card play-in game, but with Texas and Oakland going head to head for the AL West title...

Athletics beat Rangers to win AL West

The Oakland Athletics trailed the Texas Rangers in the AL West every day dating back to April 9th. The Oakland Athletics trailed the Texas Rangers by 13 games on June 30th. The AL West was Texas’ to lose. They got swept by the Athletics to finish the season and suddenly it was gone. The 170 days the Rangers led the AL West is the longest any team has ever led a division and not...

Detroit Tigers Miguel Cabrera is on the verge of winning the Triple Crown but he might sit out now that the Tigers have clinched a playoff spot. The Tigers third baseman pulled ahead of Josh Hamilton in the home race last, by hitting his 44th dinger of 2012. Cabrera also leads the American League with a .329 batting average, and 137 runs batted, putting himself in line to win the...

Column: A's write a script good as "Moneyball"

(Eds: With AP Photos.) By TIM DAHLBERG AP Sports Columnist Forget the movie about these Oakland A's. Already been done and, besides, Brad Pitt has moved on to other things. No one would believe this anyway, even if it came from a Hollywood script. The events that unfolded on a sun-splashed afternoon Wednesday in Oakland should never have happened - they shouldn't have had...
