Found April 10, 2013 on Pirates Prospects:
It took more than a week, but the Pittsburgh Pirates finally showed something resembling consistency on offense in the Bucs’ 6-5 win on Wednesday against Arizona at Chase Field. Starling Marte had two hits, including a two-run double in the fourth, in the Pirates 6-5 win at Arizona. Photo credit: David Hague The Pirates posted a season-high in runs scored and broke into double-digits in the hit column for the first time in 2013 with 11 hits against the Diamondbacks. This was not an offensive explosion by any means, but with the way the team came limping into the desert after dreadful performances against the Cubs and Dodgers any signs of life at the plate are worth celebrating (and in this case, writing about). It all started, appropriately enough, with Starling Marte. For the fourth consecutive game, Marte led off the top of the first inning with a hit and promptly stole second base and moved to third on a caught foul ball off Andrew McCutchen’s bat before scoring on Garret Jones’ ...

First Pitch: Who Could Step Into the Rotation if Wandy Goes on the DL?

At the start of the season, the Pittsburgh Pirates looked to have a great situation at the top of their rotation. A.J. Burnett had made 31+ starts each year since 2008. Wandy Rodriguez had made 30+ starts each year since 2009. They looked like guys who could give the Pirates a full seasons worth of starts, while potentially putting up 200 innings each. Rodriguez left tonight’s...

Pittsburgh Pirates 2013 Extended Spring Training Roster

Spring Training is over for the full season teams, but for players who will start the year in Jamestown, the Gulf Coast League, or the Dominican Summer League, there’s extended Spring Training. Extended Spring Training works similar to regular Spring Training in minor league camp. The team works out in the morning, then plays games in the afternoon against the Phillies, Blue Jays...

Charlie Morton and Francisco Liriano Hoping to Return in May

Charlie Morton and Francisco Liriano both threw at Pirate City this afternoon. Morton threw a 35-40 pitch bullpen session, which came two days after he threw two innings in an extended Spring Training game. Liriano threw two innings of a simulated game, throwing about 30 pitches total. I spoke with both pitchers after their work today to discuss how they were feeling physically,...

Pirates Sign Kurt Yacko

The Pittsburgh Pirates have signed right-handed pitcher Kurt Yacko, Pirates Prospects has learned. Yacko showed up on the extended Spring Training roster, a week after it was announced that he was released from the Colorado Rockies organization. Yacko has a career 3.31 ERA in 294 innings, with a 9.7 K/9 and a 2.2 BB/9. He’s mostly been a reliever, pitching as high as Double-A for...

McCarthy, D-backs look to bounce back

The Pittsburgh Pirates and Arizona Diamondbacks were heading in opposite directions before their series at Chase Field, but the Pirates managed to end their woes thanks to some early runs. While trying to get some help from James McDonald, Pittsburgh aims to make it two in a row Tuesday night. Before arriving in Phoenix, the Pirates (2-5) were off to their worst start since losing...

First Pitch: The Minors Exist For a Reason

Gerrit Cole There’s one thing you notice when you cover prospects closely: there’s no middle ground with expectations and reactions. At times it seems like there are pretty much only two reactions to a prospect. If there is a good report, or a player is performing well, there are calls for a promotion. If the player has a flaw, or is going through some struggles, the reaction...

Pollock, Marte giving D-backs tough decision

PHOENIX -- In about a week, or whenever Cody Ross returns from the disabled list, the Diamondbacks likely will be forced to return either A.J. Pollock or Alfredo Marte to the minor leagues. It is the curse of the young and optionable on a deep, veteran team. On Wednesday, they belonged in an All-Star setting, as both rookies had career games. Pollock had his first three-hit game...

D-Backs 10, Pirates 2

Today’s version of Jonathan Sanchez was the same one that went 1-9 with an 8.07 ERA last year, and that quickly ended any hopes of a sweep for the Pirates. What a mess. Sanchez gave us a bit of hope in the early innings of his first start, but today’s outing was a completely different story. The D-Backs hit him extremely hard right from the get-go, and his usual wildness also...

Diamondbacks may get Cody Ross back Friday

Cody Ross has been on the disabled list since the start of the season.  He was one of many players on the Arizona Diamondbacks' roster to start the season injured.  Fortunately, it seems Ross is closing in on making his return.  In fact, he may even make his season debut this week. According to Nick Piercoro of the Arizona Republic, Ross could return to the lineup as early...

Game 9: Diamondbacks 10 Pirates 2

Here is a blow-by-blow description of what happened in the Pirates/Diamondbacks game this afternoon: - Clint Barmes and John McDonald both in the starting lineup. Oh crap.  - Jonathan Sanchez starting. Oh crap.  - 3-0 Diamondbacks after one. Oh crap. - 6-0 Diamondbacks four batters in to the second inning.  - Third inning, Jonathan Sanchez still out there. ...

Game 8: Pirates 6 Diamondbacks 5

More than anything, this was a James McDonald Game. McDonald had a 1-0 lead when he took the mound in the first inning. He walked two of the first three hitters, then gave up a double, then a home run. It looked like the Pirates were going to be stuck with J-Mac at his worst. Instead, McDonald set down nine of the ten hitters he faced in the second, third, and fourth innings, only...
