Found June 03, 2013 on Raise the Jolly Roger!:
The Pirates have added some reinforcements to the Shark Tank (bullpen) after it was forced to cover 10 innings yesterday. They’ve called up relievers Ryan Reid and Jared Hughes. Reid, 28, will be pitching in the majors for the first time. He appears to be ready, as his numbers in Indianapolis are excellent (0.52 ERA, 0.84 WHIP, 31 K’s and 9 BB’s in 34.2 innings). He had a solid season last year in Triple-A Durham as well, so it certainly seems like he could be a useful big league reliever. The Pirates signed him to a minor league contract prior to this season. You know Hughes already. The big righty had a pretty good season with the Bucs last year but was sent down after a rough start in 2013. He has pitched well in Indy since then: 13 innings, 8 hits, 4 walks, 10 K’s, 1 run. The additions of Reid and Hughes basically came as a result of an emergency type situation, but both are capable relievers and should be just fine in the majors. It’s good to see that the Bucs have some useful ...

Baseball America’s Latest Mock Draft Has Pirates Taking Meadows

The usual mock drafts at Baseball America have been run by Jim Callis, but they switched up the process for their latest mock draft released today. They had four of their draft experts take turns making the picks. Nathan Rode picked first, followed by Callis, Conor Glassey and John Manuel. As they note, this is a little different than a mock draft, as this one is based on who they...

Pirates Ride Jones’ River Shot, Superb Bullpen To 5-4 Comeback Win

Russell Martin slides past catcher Devin Mesoraco to score the game-winning run in the 11th inning. (Photo Credit: David Hague) When PNC Park was built in 2001 along the North Shore of the Allegheny River, the Pirates erected a sign on the right-field wall to track how many home runs the Bucs would hit into the river on the fly. Twelve years later: 1. After the Pirates (35-22) missed...

The rankings include every pitcher who made at least four...

VIDEO: Garrett Jones hits ball into Allegheny River on the fly

Pittsburgh 1B Garrett Jones becomes the first Pirate to hit a home run into the Allegheny River on the fly on Sunday.  And it’s the first blast in over a decade to do so.  The shot almost took out two oblivious cyclists on the descent.  Watch the towering blast courtesy of MLB.com: Your browser does not support iframes. The only other player to clear all dry land on a blast...

First Pitch: The Bullpen, The Depth, and The Regression

I’ve spent most of the day working on finishing up the draft rankings with John Dreker. We will be writing up the draft rankings article tomorrow, and recording the rest of the draft podcast. All of that will go up on Tuesday as we prepare for the MLB Draft on Thursday. Because I spent most of the day working on those rankings, I’m going with a “thoughts” article tonight...

Pirates player hits home run out of ballpark, nearly hits a bicyclist

Pirates first baseman Garret Jones became only the second player ever to hit a home run ball out of PNC Park and into the Allegheny River. The eighth inning 2-run shot, which traveled a reported 468 feet, nearly took out a bicyclist on its way to the water. The only other blast to reach Allegheny River was by Daryle Ward of the Astros in 2002.  Pittsburgh would eventually win...

Pittsburgh Pirates Garrett Jones river home run nearly hit a cyclist (Video)

Yesterday, Pirates outfielder Garrett Jones became one of the few players to hit a home run out of PNC Park in Pittsburgh and into the Allegheny River behind the stadium. Jones blast came in the 8th inning against the Cincinnati Reds and keep eye on the below GIF as a cyclist riding along the street nearly gets hit by the long ball: (Courtesy of SB Nation)

Kiley McDaniel’s Third Mock Draft Has McGuire and Ball

Kiley McDaniel has the Pirates taking Reese McGuire with the 9th pick. Kiley McDaniel of Scout.com released his third mock draft today, and has a pretty favorable result for the Pittsburgh Pirates. With the 9th pick in the draft, McDaniel has prep catcher Reese McGuire. With the 14th pick in the draft, McDaniel has prep left-hander Trey Ball. If the Pirates could get both prep...

Pirates place Jeanmar Gomez on DL with strained forearm

Pittsburgh Pirates right-handed Jeanmar Gomez exited Sunday’s start after experiencing tightness in his forearm. The Pirates wasted little time moving Gomez to the 15-day disabled list, as they officially listed his injury as a strained forearm. To make room on the active roster, the #Pirates have placed RHP Jeanmar Gomez on the 15-day D.L. due to right forearm inflammation...

TOP OF THE SYSTEM A look at how the current top 20 prospects did today.  Note that this list doesn’t include players currently in the majors. Braves 5, Pirates 4

When the Pirates go to extra innings in Atlanta, I think Bucs fans have been conditioned to expect the worst. At least this one only required one painful extra inning, but the result was the Pirates’ fourth loss in five games. Jeff Locke delivered a pretty decent start. He lost his scoreless streak in the third inning, but seemed to be controlling the plate pretty well and recorded...

Pirates 5, Reds 4(11)

Garrett Jones is a level-headed guy. Even he gets mad sometimes. He was upset when he stepped into the batters' box in the eighth inning Sunday after striking out with runners on second and third in his previous at-bat. Jones then unleashed his anger by hitting a 463-foot game-tying home run Travis Snider then hit an RBI single with two outs in the 11th inning and the Pirates...

Game 59: Braves 5 Pirates 4

The worst part about being a Pirate fan is the little voice in the back of my head that pops out at the worst times to say, "Same old Pirates! Same old Pirates!" Before today the Pirates were 4-1 in extra inning games and had won 10 of their last 12 (by my count) one-run games. Guys like Jason Grilli and Mark Melancon might tip the odds in your favor in those sorts of games...

Braves 7, Pirates 2

The Braves blasted their way past the Bucs to take game one of this week’s series in Atlanta, as A.J. Burnett suffered through his worst start of the season. It was clear early on that Burnett wasn’t happy with home plate ump Dan Iassogna’s strike zone (it definitely did appear to be tight), and he walked three hitters in the first four innings. The third walk was to Freddie...
