A.J. Burnett was awesome in his first start as a Pirate. He was pretty good in his second one, too.

The third? Well…

A.J. Burnett is the first #Pirates starter to allow 12 runs in a game since Glenn Spencer vs. the #Cubs on April 24, 1932. #Cardinals

A.J. Burnett is the 5th pitcher in the live-ball era to allow 12+ ER in less than 3 IP; Vin Mazzaro last year was 1st since 1948.

Everything that possibly could have gone wrong for Burnett did. The Cardinals pounded everything he threw all over the yard, and it was awful. Once it was clear he didn’t have it, the Pirates left him in to try and give their bullpen a bit of rest, in hopes that Burnett could at least settle in a bit and eat up some innings. Instead, he just kept giving up hard hits and he had to come out in the third inning.  Just a nightmare for A.J.

Yankees fans certainly won’t be too surprised to see this — after all, New York did pay $20 million to get rid of the guy. Burnett has given the Pirates’ pitching staff a lift and probably will continue to do so, but he’s definitely prone to terrible lapses at times.  Let’s hope this one is limited to one game.

Other stuff:

  • Rod Barajas was ejected after disputing a call when he was behind the plate. Clint Hurdle was ejected as well.
  • The Pirates picked up a run in the second when Clint Barmes doubled home Pedro Alvarez.
  • Josh Harrison singled home Pedro in the seventh and in the ninth for the Bucs’ other two runs.
  • Pedro went 2-for-3 with a walk, so that was good.
  • The bullpen covered 5.1 scoreless innings – nice job by Brad Lincoln, Chris Resop, Juan Cruz, and Jason Grilli.
  • Carlos  Beltran homered twice on the night for the Cards.

Cardinals 12 Pirates 2 / Box / 2012 Record: 10-14 / Next: Thursday, at Cardinals, 1:45

MVP: Barmes (+.067) / LVP: Burnett (-.463) / Key play: Beltran’s 3-run HR in the first
