With lefthander Tim Byrdak continuing to experience stiffness in his left knee , it seems that adding a little depth in the way of a lefty reliever is a likely move for the New York Mets.  According to Ken Davidoff of Newsday:

Byrdak, the Mets’ best southpaw in the bullpen, said his knee has been bothering him since before spring training and that treatment wasn’t helping.

Collins went as far as to say that if Byrdak needs arthroscopic surgery, he could be back by the start of the regular season. If the problem persists, however, Collins cited Garrett Olson , Chuck James and Josh Edgin as possibilities.”

Adam Rubin of ESPN New York also added Robert Carson to that list.

James is certainly intriguing as the 30-year-old was long touted as a highly talented young starter early on in his career with Atlanta, but hasn’t been healthy since 2008.  Earlier this Spring, the lefty wasted no time letting fans know that he expects this season to be different:

That opportunity may come earlier than expected if Byrdak continues to have problems with his kneed.  In addition to James, the Mets may also view 39-year-old C.J. Nitkowski as insurance to Byrdak.

Mets liked CJ Nitkowski’s audition, but if they sign him will not invite to big-league camp, according to a team official. March 9, 2012 2:10 pm via TweetDeckReplyRetweetFavorite @SurfingTheMets Andy Martino

Nitkowski hasn’t pitched in the big leagues since 2005…….seriously.  I guess a minor league deal can’t hurt but I don’t expect a Jason Isringhausen ‘feel good’ ending to this story.  Nitkowski, like Chuck James, just seems hopeful that he’ll get a chance to prove himself.

@citycynic Thanks. Nothing official, I hope so. about 2 hours ago via webReplyRetweetFavorite @CJNitkowski CJ Nitkowski
