The Cleveland Indians have reached an agreement with shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera on a two-year contract extension that will pay him 16.5 million over the 2013 and 2014 seasons, MLB.com reported Sunday. The Indians have not yet announced the signing. The Indians tried to sign Cabrera to a multiyear contract during the offseason, but ended up signing him to a one-year, 4.55 million deal to avoid arbitration. Without the extension, Cabrera would have been eligible to become a free agent after the 2013 season. Cabrera, 26, hit .273 with 25 home runs and 92 RBIs in 2011. He was a starter in the All-Star Game and set a franchise record for home runs by a shortstop.
