For post-game, locker room interviews ONLY, mmm-kay? Honestly, WTF. W. T. F. The photo to the left is what one Mets blog is reporting is the latest in a specialized cap arsenal from the New York Metropolitans. Let me correct that and clarify. This is not a phenomenon exclusive to my Mets. It’s a league-wide thang. First, it was “batting practice hats.” These pieces of headwear are to be worn on-the-field during practice. Like, when you’re not wearing a helmet and, you know, taking batting practice. The latest iteration of the now cap-crazed baseball world, and another addition to the multiple on field cap alternates, is the “interview hat.” These babies are purported to be for the following occasions: From what I hear its purpose is to be worn during interviews and off-the-field stuff (charity events, blood drives, etc.). Unlike the NHL’s version, however, it will not be mandatory for players/coaches to wear the cap during interviews. It’s more if just a ‘Here if you want it’ type of thing. Well, isn’t that special. Or absurd depending on your opinion. Look, I get marketing. Licensed apparel is a huge thing and anyway to make a little more scratch is what the teams and leagues are tasked to do. But, really? Isn’t this going a bit extreme? These players spend the entire game, including time in the dugout, rocking caps with their team’s logo. Now, there are multiple editions of those in-game caps – for throwbacks, military appreciation and other various “special” events and happenings. Was batting practice in dire need of its own hat? Moreover, did neither the game or BP hat manage to suffice for those post-game interviews in the locker room? Alas, the powers-that-be have decided the answer is “no.” Thank goodness. Right after a “BP hat,” I’ve always had a hankering for an interview hat. In the case of the Mets, can we redeem revenues from these new lids for a serviceable major league outfielder? If so, I’m all in favor of this move. Maybe we can release some “travel hats” to be worn on team planes and buses that can be applied to upgrading Daniel Murphy.
