Cardinals minor league spring training notebook: 03/22

On Thursday, the St. Louis Cardinals had yet another camp day in which their top two and lower two rosters opposed each other while the Marlins and Mets faced off elsewhere. In addition, in large part due to Wednesday’s cancellations due to wet grounds, three was even more action than usual. A third game plus a simulated game on the fourth diamond of the quad were added. There...

Next Cardinals’ crop could be quite the harvest

Sunday’s St. Louis Post-Dispatch included a story on St. Louis Cardinals outfield prospect Oscar Taveras. Taveras opened eyes last season when he posted the highest batting average in the Midwest League since 1956. Taveras hit .386 with an on-base percentage of .444. Manager Mike Matheny admitted the batting mark caught his eye and has given Taveras a handful of at-bats with the...

Carpenter out indefinitely with nerve irritation

Cardinals ace Chris Carpenter has been shutdown indefinitely due to nerve irritation that has led to weakness in his right shoulder, the club announced Friday. The news is particularly troubling to the Cardinals and Carpenter, who missed the 2004 playoffs due to a similar nerve issue and had surgery in 2008 to transpose a nerve in his right elbow. The right-hander was sidelined...

Reyes Homers in Loss

Jose Reyes hit his first homerun of the Grapefruit League during Friday’s 2-1 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals.  It was the fifth time the Miami Marlins had matched up with the World Champions this Spring.   The loss extended the Marlins’ streak without a win that dates back to last Thursday.    Overall Miami is now 7-9 in the Grapefruit League. Carlos Zambrano started and...

CARDINALS THIRD BASEMAN DAVID FREESE GETS A GQ MAKEOVER

David Freese led the St. Louis Cardinals to a World Series victory last season, earning the NLCS MVP and World Series MVP awards in the process. Despite his success and his new status as a hometown hero, the Cardinals third baseman still had room for improvement, at least when it came to his fashion game. Freese classified his personal style as “lacking” and referred to his hair...

2012 Top 20 Prospects – Miami Marlins

It’s prospect season again. I’ve had my rankings listed on team pages, but have been horrible about keeping those up to date. As I mentioned on the pages, I’m looking at other rankings when I make mine (along with scouting reports and my own opinion). Next is the Miami Marlins. For the top 20, I’ve listed them according to my ranking. I’ve also listed the rankings of other...

Garcia strikes out nine in dominant outing

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) -- St. Louis manager Mike Matheny liked what he saw from Jaime Garcia on Thursday. Garcia struck out nine in five innings and the Cardinals roughed up Gio Gonzalez in a 9-0 win over the Washington Nationals. "When Jaime is on he's something to watch," Matheny said. "He's just got that stuff that's hard to square up. It's not a fun...

Finding Keepers: Miami Marlins

The transformation from Florida Marlins to Miami Marlins involved much more than a name change. There’s a new stadium. A new manager. A new shortstop. A new left-handed starter. A new closer. New expectations. But in the end the Marlins have assembled a group of talented players but a roster with just as many question marks as sure things. There’s potential there, on paper,...

Lance Berkman: Keeper of the Faith

This past week, Lance Berkman created a stir nationally when he offered his opinions of the Astros move to the American League. Throughout the offseason he has been offering his opinions on the move itself. The crime of it all is that he was the only prominent person opposing the move and calling it an abomination. This week he uttered the words that all of us in the...

Cardinals 9, Nationals 0

Jaime Garcia struck out nine in five innings to lead the St. Louis Cardinals to a 9-0 victory over the Washington Nationals on Thursday. Garcia struck out two batters in each of the first four innings and didn't allow a walk. He gave up three hits. The Nationals Gio Gonzalez didn't fare nearly as well, having to be lifted before the end of the fourth inning. In what was...

Winless Streak Extended

The Miami Marlins returned to action on Thursday after a much needed day off but the results remained the same as they tied the Atlanta Braves 5-5.  The Marlins have not been able to put together a win since last Thursday.  In that time, they have lost five games and tied two.     On a positive note, Miami tallied thirteen hits in this game. Ricky Nolasco made the start and...

Red Sox 4, Marlins 1

Felix Doubrant allowed one run and five hits over six innings in his fourth spring training appearance, helping a Boston Red Sox split squad defeat the Miami Marlins 4-1 Saturday. Doubrant struck out two and walked one, throwing 53 of 78 pitches for strikes. He lowered his ERA to 2.70. Trying to each a bench spot with the Marlins, Austin Kearns homered in the second. He leads the...
