The Brewers tied it in the ninth on Norichika Aoki's two-out, two-run homer off closer Jason Motte. The two-strike drive barely cleared the right-field wall. The Cardinals ended a three-game skid and held their slim lead for the second NL wild-card spot. Cardinals ace Carpenter nearing return

SAN DIEGO A 70-pitch simulated game was a step in the right direction but not enough to convince the Cardinals that ace Chris Carpenter is ready to pitch in a big league game just yet. Carpenter, 37, has yet to pitch this season while dealing with a nerve issue in his neck and right shoulder. But he threw his third simulated game Monday afternoon at Petco Park and continues to...

Berkman to have season-ending knee surgery

SAN DIEGO -- Cardinals first baseman Lance Berkman will undergo season-ending surgery on his right knee Tuesday in Houston that could signal the end of his 14-year career. He tried to finish the season as a pinch-hitter off the bench but became so limited that he had to have a designated...

Cardinals' Garcia continues to have trouble on road

Left-hander Jaime Garcia's problems on the road have been well documented. His earned run average on the road has been more than two runs higher than his ERA at home during his career (4.68 to 2.42), and, if typecast, Garcia was just what many people expected Monday night. Garcia, after ducking out of first-inning trouble in San Diego when he got two strikeouts to strand the...

After 13 innings, nearly seven hours, an occurrence of #weirdbaseball, and another blown save, the Brewers won 5-4 on the strength of a Ryan Braun home run...

BREWERS BIGGEST FAN: My day with Ben Rouse

You might remember when I called Ben Rouse a dilweed for going to every STINKING BREWER game BOTH  HOME AND AWAY this year. Then I found out it was for charity. Then I promised to go the game with him (and donate a $100 to his cause). Then I did it. Game 123, Aug. 22, day game. Those ain’t sweat stains. Ok, they are sweat stains. And here’s what I found out.
