ST. LOUIS -- Kolten Wong's road to becoming an everyday second baseman in the majors has taken a detour. Wong and fifth outfielder Shane Robinson were sent to Class AAA Memphis on Sunday night. Meanwhile, infielder Greg Garcia and outfielder Randal Grichuk were promoted from Memphis. Garcia and Grichuk, who are expected to be in uniform Monday night, will be suiting up in the major leagues for the first time. The Cardinals, who have been struggling on offense, hope that the newcomers provide a boost off the bench and that Wong can rediscover his swing playing regularly in Class AAA. After a strong showing in spring training, he entered the season with the everyday job at second and was hitting .280 with a .400 on-base percentage after the first eight games. But he had hit only .196 since April 9 and his playing time dwindled. Garcia, 24, is expected to back up Mark Ellis at second as well as fill in at shortstop. A teammate of Wong's at the University of Hawaii, Garcia was hitting .277 with a team-leading five homers in Memphis. Grichuk, 22, acquired from the Angels last November, was hitting .313 for the Redbirds with a team-best 17 RBIs. The Cardinals opted to call up Grichuk over three other outfielders also off to strong starts in Class AAA: Joey Butler (.431), Stephen Piscotty (.321) and Oscar Taveras (.303). The little-used Robinson, 29, had two hits in 20 at-bats for the Cardinals. He arrived in St. Louis for the first time in 2009 but still spent part of the past five seasons in Memphis and Springfield. He could take over center field for Grichuk in Memphis unless the club decides to give Taveras an opportunity there. Taveras has played center in two games for the Redbirds so far, spending most of his time in the corner outfield spots. Cardinals look to shake thing up by demoting Kolten Wong

With their offense continuing to struggle, the Cardinals decided to shake things up by demoting second baseman Kolten Wong to AAA.  Wong has certainly struggled on the season, hitting just .225/.276/.268, but he is not the only one.Shortstop Jhonny Peralta (.195/.290/.476) is not doing much to make Cardinals fans forget about Pete Kozma and his offensive struggles.  "Clutch...

Wong Demotion Highlights Changing Cardinal Tides

To say that the Cardinal offense has been stagnant of late would be about as gross of an understatement as possible. Until yesterday’s seven run outburst, the team had not scored more than four runs in a single game since April 17th. In the midst of this dry spell, they leaned as much on pitching as possible, but as is the case when a team is that lopsided, it played close to the...

Kolten Wong & Shane Robinson Sent to AAA

Former UH All-American and Cardinals 2B Kolten Wong was optioned to AAA Memphis today #HawaiiBSB — Sam Spangler (@SamSpanglerKHON) April 28, 2014

The Cardinals' center field dilemma

The St. Louis Cardinals have struggled thus far at the plate. They are currently twelfth in the National League in runs scored and eleventh in team OPS. That recently led to the demotion of Kolten Wong and the call up of Randal Grichuk and Greg Garcia. Grichuk can play center field and was hitting well in the minors, which is attractive to the Cardinals because neither Jon Jay...

Does the Cardinals' Greg Garcia have what it takes to start at second base?

With the demotion of Kolten Wong and the promotion of infielder Greg Garcia, fantasy baseball players everywhere were left asking the question:  Will Greg Garcia start? Its a legitimate question, as the Cardinals other option, Mark Ellis, is currently hitting .100 (2 for 20), however, is Garcia a legitimate starting second baseman for a major league team?Short answer--probably not...

Your Randal Grichuk / Greg Garcia Primer

So you heard the big news today. Kolten Wong and Sugar Shane Robinson were optioned to Memphis while Randal Grichuk and Greg Garcia were called up. Maybe you’re just not that into the Cardinals farm system. Maybe you don’t care about players until they show up in the bigs. Maybe you thought Jhonny Peralta needed come company on the all miss-spelled first names list. Whatever...

Oscar Taveras homers, Seth Blair somehow tosses 5 scoreless innings

It was a rough night down on the farm as Springfield was the only winner and Palm Beach and Peoria allowed double-digit runs. Oscar Taveras hit an absolute bomb for Memphis. I am somewhat surprised that Randal Grichuk got his first major league call up before Taveras. I think the Cards want Taveras to play more center field before he gets the call. I could see Grichuk struggling...

Cardinals' Jason Motte and Jaime Garcia making progress

The St. Louis Cardinals dropped to 13-12 on the season following a 6-1 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday. The one run scored marked the third straight game the Cardinals have score a single run and the 10th time this season with zero or one run. The Cardinals are getting by with a pitching staff that is 4th in the Major Leagues in ERA. Two more arms could be returning...

No complaints from Cards' 7-0 victory in finale vs. Pirates

ST. LOUIS -- Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright is so dominant right now that he's taken to toying with his pitches during games. You want a slow curve? How about 69 mph. A slow cutter? Typically a pitch he throws around 88 mph, he threw a few in the low 80s. Wainwright even used his changeup as more than a show pitch against the Pirates on Sunday afternoon at Busch Stadium, and got...

Cards send dominant Wainwright to mound in search of series win

Adam Wainwright is bringing a 17-inning scoreless streak into Sunday's three-game series finale against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Pirates probably have bad memories of the last time they faced the St. Louis Cardinals starter on his home field. Wainwright (4-1, 1.46 ERA) went 2-0 with a 1.13 ERA and 15 strikeouts in two home starts against Pittsburgh in last year's NL division...

Cardinals squander numerous chances in 12-inning loss to Brewers

ST. LOUIS -- Even Cardinals manager and eternal optimist Mike Matheny said his team's 5-3, 12-inning loss to the Milwaukee Brewers Monday night was a difficult one to deal with. "It's tough as one we've had this year, for sure," Matheny said. "Not very often that we get a three-run lead here recently and then not to be able to hold it, (plus) having a couple...

Peralta goes deep twice in Cardinals win over Pirates

Jhonny Peralta hit two home runs, the first ending a run of 366 at-bats by the Cardinals without one, and Adam Wainwright struck out seven in eight scoreless innings as the Cardinals closed out their weekend series with the Pirates with a 7-0 win on Sunday at Busch Stadium. The Cardinals hadn't hit a home run since April 16 when Peralta unloaded a blast into the third deck in...

Brewers outlast Cardinals 5-3 in 12 innings

ST. LOUIS -- Khris Davis overcame striking out four times early in the game and came through with a run-scoring triple in the 12th inning to lead the Milwaukee Brewers to a 5-3 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday night. Davis drove in Jonathan Lucroy, who doubled off Seth Maness (0-2) to start the inning. Mark Reynolds then drove in Davis with a sacrifice fly. Davis, who finished...

Tim McCarver Makes Cardinals Broadcast Debut

Tim McCarver, former lead analyst for FOX baseball the past 18 seasons, started his new job as part-time analyst for Fox Sports Midwest last night during the Cardinals game versus the Brewers. McCarver is slated to call 30 games for the Cardinals in 2014, including tonight’s game and then the Cubs series this weekend in Chicago. Here’s an unpopular opinion: this is a big upgrade...

Game 26: Cardinals 7 Pirates 0

There was a moment in the bottom of the second inning in which I was sure the Pirates were about to come off of the rails yesterday. With one out and runners on first and third, Daniel Descalso hit a sharp grounder to Edinson Volquez. It should’ve been an easy inning-ending double play, but Volquez threw the ball home to try and get Yadier Molina at the plate. Molina got into a...
