The Baby Birds finished with a 5-2 record on Monday. Peoria, Palm Beach, State College, Johnson City, and the GCL Cards were all winners while Memphis and Springfield took the only 2 losses. In the upper minors, Boone Whiting made it through 5 innings for the first time in 4 starts but still took the loss as the Memphis bats were silent. Jake Lemmerman hit a 3-run home run and Stephen Piscotty added a solo home run in Springfield’s loss. Kyle Hald was solid for 7 innings and Colin Walsh continues to be a great lead-off spark for the Palm Beach Cardinals. In the lower minors, Corey Jones threw 6 more shutout innings to lower his ERA to near 1.00, also Patrick Wisdom drove in three runs for the second straight night in the Peoria win. David Washington homered for the second time in three games for State College, who lost pitcher Chris Perry to Peoria today. Kenny Peoples-Walls continues to impress for the Johnson City Cardinals as he hit his first home run on Monday. Marco Gonzales (pictured) threw a scoreless inning in his professional debut and Malik Collymore recorded his first professional hit in the GCL Cards win. Here are quick game summaries followed by individual performances: (AAA) The Memphis Redbirds fell to the Omaha StormChasers, the Kansas City Royals Triple-A affiliate, 5-1 on Monday. The Redbirds had 9 hits but were only able to score once in the second. Scott McGregor gets the Tuesday start for the 44-48 Redbirds. (AA) The Springfield Cardinals lost to the San Antonio Missions 7-4 on Monday. the Cardinals scored 4 times in the 4th, all runs coming on home runs. The 41-45 Cardinals have the day off on Tuesday. (A+) The Palm Beach Cardinals defeated the Jupiter Hammerheads 5-1 on Monday at Roger Dean Stadium. The Cards scored 2 in the 2nd, 2 in the 6th, and 1 in the 9th to put away Jupiter. The 39-46 Cards take on Bradenton at home on Tuesday. (A-) The Peoria Chiefs defeat the Beloit Snappers for the fourth straight time. The Chiefs won on Monday 8-0 as the pitching staff recorded 13 strikeouts. This team is really rolling. (SS-A) The State College Spikes scored 2 runs in the first before the Mahoning Valley Scrappers scored three in the 4th inning. The Spikes put it away with 2 in the bottom of the 7th. Willy Paulino gets the Tuesday start for the 13-8 Spikes. (SS-R) The Johnson City Cardinals got past the Bluefield Blue Jays 5-1 on Monday night. The Cards scored 3 insurance runs in the top of the 7th to put the game away. Blake McKnight gets the Tuesday start for the 10-7 Cardinals. (GCL) The GCL Cards defeated the GCL Nationals 2-1 with single runs in the 3rd and 5th. The Cards even out their record at 7-7. On Tuesday, the Cards travel to Viera to take on the Nationals at their park.
