Newly introduced St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny may owe more than $4 million as a result of a legal dispute over bad real estate deals.
A report in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch says Matheny is in such dire straits that he had to unload his home last year and he’s now living with his in-laws.
Last Monday, the 41-year-old Matheny was introduced as the Cardinals new manager, replacing Tony La Russa. La Russa retired after leading the team to the 2011 World Series title.
Matheny, a former Cardinals star catcher, is reportedly making less than $750,000 a year in his new job.
During his playing days in the early 2000s, Matheny built this 17-room home on 11 acres in suburban Wildwood. It has an indoor batting cage, home theater and a pool with a water slide. The estate even has its own floating golf green in the middle of a private lake.
