The Cardinals finished a 7-2 home stand with a robust offensive display and a 12-2 victory over the Seattle Mariners Sunday at Busch Stadium. Rookie starter Shelby Miller went five solid innings allowing three hits and one earned run to pick up his 14th victory. The last time a rookie won 14 games for the Cardinals was Dick Hughes in 1967. The Cardinals won the World Series that season; maybe it's a sign. With the Pirates beating the Cubs 3-2 the Cardinals (87-62) kept pace tied with Pittsburgh for the National League Central lead with 13 games to play. The club begins a six game road trip on Monday in Colorado. There were a number of hitting stars for the Cardinals. Handcuffed by Seattle pitching through the weekend the offense erupted for 19 hits against Seattle starter Erasmo Ramirez and a trail of relievers. Yadier Molina enjoyed the biggest afternoon with four hits and his 12th home run to spark the explosion. Meanwhile rookie first baseman Matt Adams has two runs batte...

Jaime Garcia targeting surprise return to Cardinals in regular season

It may seem implausible, but Jaime Garcia is still contemplating a return to the St Louis Cardinals after undergoing shoulder surgery in May. Chad Thornburg of MLB.com reports that the left-hander is using the Cardinals' battle to win the NL Central as motivation to return this September. Garcia spoke about how the division race is helping him to stay motivated during his rehab...

Molina's HR, 4 hits lead Cardinals past Mariners

Yadier Molina broke out of a slump with a home run and three singles as Shelby Miller and the St. Louis Cardinals remained tied for first place in the NL Central with a 12-2 win Sunday over the Seattle Mariners. Matt Adams also homered as St. Louis won for the seventh time in nine games and kept pace with Pittsburgh. Both teams are 87-62 with 13 games remaining. Miller (14-9) gave...

Molina's 4-hit effort leads Cards

Yadier Molina never got down during his recent rut. So the All-Star catcher wasn't about to celebrate after breaking out of the skid on Sunday. Molina had a home run and three singles as Shelby Miller and the St. Louis Cardinals remained tied for first place in the NL Central with a 12-2 win over the Seattle Mariners. Molina's second-inning homer off Erasmo Ramirez (5-2...

Cards can't solve rookie Paxton

The St. Louis Cardinals' offense is back in one of those rough patches. They need to be out of this rut soon. ''There's nothing wrong with us getting a couple of hits early,'' manager Mike Matheny said after the Seattle Mariners snapped a five-game losing streak with a 4-1 victory Saturday night. ''There's nothing wrong with getting a couple of...

Preview: Kelly seeks to rebound from a rare loss

The St. Louis Cardinals had their bid for sole possession of first place spoiled by the Colorado Rockies, whose game-winning rally saw a key contribution from Todd Helton in one of his final games at Coors Field. Coming off his first loss in more than three months, it will be Joe Kelly trying to spoil Helton's farewell homestand when he takes the mound for St. Louis on Tuesday...

NL Central Face Off: St.Louis Cardinals vs. Pittsburgh Pirates

This year has been a tremendous year for the National League Central. The Pittsburgh Pirates have their first winning season since 1992. The Cincinnati Reds are in position for a wildcard spot. The St. Louis Cardinals are looking to repeat previous year’s successes. The NL Central’s playoff race seems like the most ignored story in sports right now, and yet it has the most drama...

Road Hard

And here we go again.  The Cardinals hit the road in Denver Colorado and promptly lifted their leg and marked another away game with a big wet L, losing to the very, very bad Rockies 4-2. That drops the Birds record to 2-6 in the last 8 road games. In the midst of an NL Central dogfight. Against the Rockies, who again, are TURRUBLE. Worse? An actual honest to goodness...

Looking Back: Mariners vs. Cardinals series rewind

Coming to a Close Don’t be fooled by the Seattle Mariners dropping two of three to the St. Louis Cardinals, they actually played pretty well for  team who was just swept by the Houston Astros. Making the trek across the nation, the Mariners could have easily tuned out for the rest of the season, slunk their heads and shoulders, and taken a beating from a team looking to win it’s...

Bullpen falters as Cardinals lose to Rockies 6-2

A rare letdown by the bullpen kept the St. Louis Cardinals from moving into first place alone. The relief corps was touched up for four runs in the eighth inning of a 6-2 loss to the Colorado Rockies on Monday night. Charlie Blackmon had three hits and three RBIs for the Rockies, who prevented the Cardinals from taking over sole possession of the NL Central lead. They remained...

Paxton stays hot in second start as Mariners beat Cardinals 4-1

Anyone expecting James Paxton to be intimidated by a huge crowd and playoff-type environment would have been sorely disappointed. It turns out Paxton in only his second career start Saturday night didn’t even realize how big the Busch Stadium crowd actually was. Not that anyone heard much cheering from the 41374 fans during a 4-1 win by Paxton and a Mariners squad that held the...

Saunders chased in 6th, Mariners lose to Tigers

Joe Saunders was much better against Detroit than he was in his previous start. Then the Tigers finally broke through in the sixth inning - a frustrating finish for the veteran left-hander. Victor Martinez hit a tiebreaking single in the sixth, and Omar Infante followed with his own RBI single to chase Saunders and help Detroit to a 4-2 victory over Seattle on Monday night. The...

When striking out might not be a good thing

Strikeout rates have steadily risen in Major League Baseball, which just about everybody knows. And there has been much written about whether the increase is bad or not. But when you consider that the MLB strikeout rate is now at 7.51 per nine innings and compare that to 6.52 per nine just seven years ago, you have a significant culture change. I have had people tell me that an out...
