(AP) -- The St. Louis Cardinals bounced back, while the Philadelphia Phillies' performance seemed to suggest that the previous game was little more than an aberration.
Philadelphia will turn to Kyle Kendrick as it tries to salvage a four-game split Sunday night at Citizens Bank Ballpark.
The Cardinals (10-7) rebounded from an 8-0 loss Friday for a 5-0 win on Saturday, led by a brilliant start from Lance Lynn and solid production from the heart of the batting order. Jaime Garcia lasted just three innings and allowed eight runs on nine hits Friday, but Lynn picked up the team in a big way, throwing seven innings while yielding one hit.
St. Louis' No 2-3-4-5-6 hitters accounted for all of the team's hits, going 8 for 20. Carlos Beltran homered for the third straight game, continuing to show a fondness for playing the Phillies, particularly on the road. Saturday marked his 30th career homer against Philadelphia and his sixth over his last 13 contests at Citizens Bank Park.
"I don't think about homers, I think about trying to get on base," said Beltran, hitting .268 with four homers and 12 RBIs. "But if you get a good approach and connect with the ball good, sometimes that happens."
Cardinals right-hander Jake Westbrook (1-1, 0.00 ERA) was fortunate that his last start was washed away by rain after he gave up four runs on five hits in two innings Tuesday against Pittsburgh.
"I made some mistakes, and they capitalized on them," Westbrook, who seeks his 100th career victory, told the team's official website. "I missed a few spots. Usually I can get away with (mistakes), but tonight, that wasn't the case. It's just one of those things where I wasn't as sharp as I need to be."
Westbrook is 2-1 with a 4.39 ERA in five starts against Philadelphia.
The Phillies (7-11) seemed to wake up their offense in Friday's 8-2 victory, but it didn't last for long as they managed just three hits Saturday, with John Mayberry Jr.'s fifth-inning double the only one against Lynn. Philadelphia has just seven runs in five losses over its last six games.
Manager Charlie Manuel hopes for a boost with the possible return of Ryan Howard on Sunday, as he's been out of the lineup for two straight games with a sore groin. But even in the 16 games Howard has played, he hasn't been particularly powerful, slugging just .387 with one homer and five RBIs.
"We need to get Ryan going," Manuel said. "We need Ryan's power in the lineup. He's our big RBI guy."
Philadelphia will look for a lift from Kendrick (1-1, 3.38 ERA), who has proven successful against the Cardinals, going 5-1 with a 2.63 ERA in six career starts.
Despite the Phillies' offensive woes, Michael Young continued an 11-game hitting streak with a ninth-inning single Saturday after striking out in his first three at-bats. He is 14 for 38 (.368) during the streak, and 11 for 27 (.407) against Westbrook.

Ryan Howard is an easy target of criticism by Phillies fans. For those who pay attention to the deeper numbers and statistics of the game, Ryan Howard has his flaws. This cannot be denied when taking his contract value in to consideration. But as the month of April starts to wind down I was curious how Howard's first month of the season has compared to some of his previous Aprils...
Did the Phillies get what they thought with Ben Revere? The stats certainly say no.
One of the amazing parts of doing Phillies Nation TV is that we don’t always get to use everything we shoot for the show. A few weeks back, we were able to speak with tonight’s starter Jonathan Pettibone regarding his preparation for 2013. The interview is brief, raw, and uncut but hopefully will let folks who may not have heard of Jon before put a face to a name. Enjoy!
And so, the St. Louis Cardinals return to Washington for the first time since the last time the St. Louis Cardinals were in Washington. It's still not easy to talk about that night, so let's just get it over with and watch the video of Pete Kozma's hit that probably never should've happened in the first place. There it is above. Go ahead, do it. Barry Svrluga'...
So Mitchell Boggs in the 7th?
One of these innings he's going to be good again, right? We'll just see how low we have to go. Like a reverse limbo stick.
I'm pretty sure that #TossedSalas has pitched a good game in his career. I can't seem to reach that far back for the actual proof, though. So if you've got some antidotes or pictures from way back when...
Weekly St. Louis Cardinals-focused chat on KXnO FOX Sports Radio 1460 in Des Moines.
Late Friday afternoon, I joined Ken Miller on KXnO FOX Sports Radio 1460 in Des Moines in our regular series to discuss the St. Louis Cardinals, “Cardinal Talk.” This time, we discussed the current road trip in Philadelphia, the Washington series ahead and some kid named Oscar Taveras.
The Roy Halladay we have all been waiting to see returned last night in an 8-2 win over the Cardinals. It began with his last start against the Marlins and then Friday night, he continued to improve in an impressive 7-inning effort.
The game was called due to rain after the 7th, so this will go in the books as a complete game for Halladay. He allowed only 2 runs, both solo homers...
When John Lannan went down with a knee injury last week, there was a lot of speculation of who was going to take his next scheduled start. While many fans including myself would have liked to see Adam Morgan take Lannan’s start it just wasn’t possible giving the way the Ironpigs rotation goes. Another potential roadblock for Morgan is that he is not on the 40 man roster...
(AP) -- With their offense possibly awoken, the Philadelphia Phillies are hoping to parlay a win over the St. Louis Cardinals into more success.
The sturdy Cliff Lee should give them a chance to do so as he takes the mound Saturday night against the visiting Cardinals.
Philadelphia's 8-2 win Friday in the second of a four-game set snapped a four-game slide. Though it was shortened...
Let's face it, the Phillies kind of stink. I mean, they don't full blown stink, but their style of play has been disheartening to say the least. The offense is particularly horrific. I've racked my brain for ways to quick fix this team right now. We cannot wait until next...
Yadier Molina drove in the go-ahead run in the sixth inning, backing Shelby Miller's strong start Monday night, and the St. Louis Cardinals returned to the site of their Game 5 NL division series victory last season with a 3-2 victory over the Washington Nationals.
The other big hit for St. Louis was Allen Craig's two-run double in the third.

Things are settling in nicely here at the Closer Report. We’re starting to get some clarity on jobs as manager’s back new closers and incumbents pitch and solidify their status.

Edward Mujica has charged into the lead of the bullpen race in St. Louis. Mitchell Boggs has been inconsistent at best. Trevor Rosenthal has been electric, but hittable. Mujica has...
(AP) -- While the Washington Nationals are coming off a frustrating loss, how they feel surely pales in comparison to what they went through in October.
In a rematch of their 2012 NL division series, Washington tries to get some revenge against the visiting St. Louis Cardinals in the opener of a three-game set Monday night.
The Nationals (10-8) led 6-0 after three innings and were...
Former St. Louis Cardinals baseball superstars and World Series champion teammates, Ozzie Smith and Vince Coleman joined forces to once again win a title, but this time on a golf course as they won the 12th annual Michael Jordan Celebrity Invitational (MJCI).
The tournament was hosted by ARIA Resort & Casino and was held at Shadow Creek for the third consecutive year. The event...
