Rain has wiped out Tuesday night's game between the St. Louis Cardinals and Pittsburgh Pirates. The storm hit at the end of the second inning with the Pirates leading 4-2, and the game was called after a delay of 1 hour, 24 minutes. No makeup date was immediately announced. The cancellation allows St. Louis starter Jake Westbrook to reset his ERA to 0.00. The right-hander has struggled against the Pirates in his career, and Pittsburgh turned five consecutive singles in the first inning into four runs. Pittsburgh starter Jonathan Sanchez - who came in with a 12.96 ERA - allowed two runs in the first inning but retired the side in order in the second.

Alex Presley joins the team

The #Pirates option RHP Phil Irwin to AAA Indianapolis and recall OF Alex Presley. — Pittsburgh Pirates (@Pirates) April 15, 2013 As expected, the Pirates sent Phil Irwin back to Triple-A after yesterday’s spot start. I would not be surprised to see him back (and would still prefer him over Jonathan Sanchez, probably), but Irwin could probably benefit from some more time in the...

Report: Brandon Inge Has Peanuts Thrown at Him, Teammates Attempt to Fight Perpetrator

Poor Brandon Inge. Not only is he toiling away in the minor leagues, but now fans are throwing peanuts at him. A fight nearly broke out after a Toledo Mud Hens fan was throwing peanuts at the former Tigers third baseman on Tuesday, according to the Toledo Blade. The fan and Inge, now playing for the Pirates Triple-A affiliate, the Indianapolis Indians, exchanged words before “a...

Pittsburgh Pirates fan catches foul ball with massive baseball glove

The Pittsburgh Pirates got absolutely destroyed by the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday night, losing 10-6.  While the game may not have gone in the Pirates favor, this Pirates fan looked like he enjoyed himself.  Good thing he caught the ball, because if you miss catching a foul ball with a glove that size you would never hear the end of it.  Plus, had he missed it, we wouldn...

Cardinals 10, Pirates 6

This one started and ended with James McDonald. What an absolutely horrible performance. The Cardinals obliterated J-Mac, who looked absolutely helpless out on the mound against a team he dominated last season. The Pirates ended up having a pretty decent day at the plate but it didn’t matter. Thanks to some bad St. Louis baserunning and a couple hard-hit balls right at people,...

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. St. Louis Cardinals – Game 14, Version 2

We are going to lose a Jonathan Sanchez start?  Nooooooooo! Wow. There isn’t much in the world that sums up the 1980s quite like that. Last night’s game will be rescheduled and it will start over. Sorry Pedro Alvarez, no hit for you. Imagine how different life would be if A.J. Burnett would have signed…

Cardinals/Pirates: Three things to walk with

The Cardinals leave out of Pittsburgh with essentially a split series due to the rain out of Tuesday evening, and also with a series that’s a tale of two halves. After an offensive eruption in game one, which they won 10-6 on Monday, they could barely find their way into the hit column two days later, dropping the final game of the series 5-0 to AJ Burnett. Now, as they depart...

St. Louis Cardinals: Offensive outburst leads Cards over Pirates 10-3

The St. Louis Cardinals have been led by solid starting pitching all season while manager Mike Matheny's very potent offense had taken a back seat through the team's first 12 games. On Monday night at Pittsburgh, the offense exploded for seven runs in the second inning to beat the Pirates 10-3. After scoring a run on an Allen Craig fielder's choice in the first inning...

Bucs and Cards rained out

Before the game and during the top of the first inning, rain would have been great news for the Pirates. Instead, it ended up hurting them when storms descended upon PNC Park at the end of the second inning. Jonathan Sanchez was terrible to start the game and allowed two quick runs. The Bucs, however, bounced back beautifully and jumped all over Jake Westbrook in the bottom of the...

Is bunting overrated?

A normally boring topic, bunting, was pushed into the headlines by the 2012 St. Louis Cardinals. First-year manager Mike Matheny took a fair amount of heat for his relatively-frequent calls for the bunt as well as their timing, but mostly because of the apparent lack of success in execution killed more than one potential rally during a season in which the club barely made the playoffs...
