Cardinals rookie right-hander Michael Wacha put together arguably the greatest National League Championship Series ever by a rookie pitcher and he was named the NLCS Most Valuable Player Award winner after leading the Cards to the World Series with yet another sterling postseason performance in Friday night's 9-0 blanking of the Dodgers in Game 6. Wacha held the Dodgers to two hits over seven scoreless innings while striking out five and walking one. He was 2-0 with a .149 average against with 13 strikeouts and two walks in 13 2/3 scoreless innings in the NLCS. The 22-year-old is the youngest NLCS MVP Award winner since 21-year-old Steve Avery of the Braves in 1991. Obviously he's a really good pitcher" Cardinals pitcher Joe Kelly said. "There's not anything you can't say about him. He's just going out there and he's pitching his butt off right now. As you can see he's just a pretty dang good pitcher to me." Other rookies to win postseason MVP awards include: Larry Sherry (Dodgers 1959 World Series) Mike Boddicker (Orioles 1983 ALCS) and Livan Hernandez (Marlins 1997 NLCS and World Series). Wacha is the first Cardinals pitcher to win the NLCS MVP Award (which was first given away in 1977) and he joins Hall of Fame right-hander Bob Gibson (1967 '64) as the only St. Louis hurler to earn a postseason MVP award.
