ST. LOUIS - Adding to their stable of young arms, the Cardinals made Gonzaga lefty Marco Gonzalez the 19th pick in the first round of baseballs amateur draft Thursday night.
Gonzalez, a 6-1, 185-pound 21-year-old, is considered a finesse pitcher with a fastball that tops out in the upper-80mph range. He was a two-way player in college who led the Zags in hitting this season.
In the draft prospect rankings, the Cardinals ended up with a player who was ranked 14th by mlb.com, 23rd by ESPN and 28th by Baseball America.
The Cardinals have another first-round pick, at 28th.
