Two October heroes in the past for the Cardinals helped carry them to more October baseball in the future tonight at Busch Stadium. Adam Wainwright the relief star of the 2006 World Series championship for the Cardinals held the Pittsburgh Pirates to eight singles over nine innings. David Freese the hitting star of the 2011 World Series championship for the Cardinals hit a two-run homer in the second to give his club an early lead in what became a 6-1 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates in the decisive Game 5 of the National League division series. The triumph enabled the Cardinals to qualify for their eighth league championship series in the last 14 seasons. They will meet the Los Angeles Dodgers here Friday night in the first game of the best-of-seven series and will play the Dodgers here again on Saturday before moving to Los Angeles for as many as three games Monday through Wednesday with the final two if necessary scheduled for Busch Stadium next Friday and Saturday. The Cardinals will have the home-field advantage in the series by virtue of posting the best record in the league at 97-65 during the regular season. Freese’s homer off impressive Pittsburgh rookie Gerrit Cole after a walk to Jon Jay gave the Cardinals a 2-0 lead in the second. Jay’s single off lefthander Justin Wilson made it 3-0 in the sixth. Pittsburgh scratched out a run on three infield hits in the seventh and had a runner called out at first to end the eighth as Starling Marte lined into a double play the third of the night turned by the Cardinals when baserunner Jordy Mercer probably got back to the bag safely. But burly Cardinals rookie Matt Adams took matters into his meaty hands in the home eighth powering a 408-foot two-run homer off reliever Mark Melancon to help put the game away. Adams’ first postseason homer came after Matt Holliday’s second single of the night. Pete Kozma who made a couple of spectacular plays at shortstop before making one mistake singled in the final run of the inning. He hit safely in all three games he played after being restored to the starting lineup.
