The ball lined straight off the bat of Dodgers leadoff hitter Carl Crawford at Shelby Miller’s pitching elbow forcing the Cardinals rookie starter out of the game with a right elbow contusion. Following a brief inning of relief from rookie reliever Michael Blazek Mike Matheny made a bold decision.
He opted to use tomorrow night’s starter to replace tonight’s.
Jake Westbrook came into the game in the second inning and the decision did not fare so well. He gave up six runs in the inning and three more combined in the fifth and sixth lasting 4.2 innings giving up nine runs on 13 hits in route to a 13-4 loss to the Dodgers.
The culprit of most of the RBIs for Los Angeles came off the bat of former Cardinals infielder Skip Schumaker who drove in four runs. Andre Ethier also had four RBIs Jerry Hairston Jr. drove in two and Crawford Adrian Gonzalez and Dee Gordon each added an RBI apiece.
