The Cardinals would have to give the Rockies a reason to trade all-star shortstop Troy Tulowitzki. He fits their needs, but the Rockies aren’t pursuing a deal. They are only willing to take the call, and any traction will depend on the Cardinals’ willingness to include elite young pitchers like Michael Wacha, Trevor Rosenthal and Carlos Martinez (perhaps two of them) as the center of any deal that would also have to involve a position player. Talking to multiple people with direct knowledge of the Rockies’ thinking late Monday night, nothing has changed. They will listen because they would be remiss if they didn’t. There’s been no traction at this point. The Cardinals have other options, linked to free agent Stephen Drew, and, in trades rumors, to Cleveland’s Asdrubal Cabrera, Baltimore’s J.J. Hardy and the Rangers’ Elvis Andrus and Jurickson Profar. For now, the Cardinals landing Tulo exists as a longshot. The Rockies would like to believe their chances of signing Carlos Ruiz are better. Colorado made an offer to Ruiz over the past 48 hours, and that has them in the mix for the veteran catcher. It may take an over pay in either money (something Colorado has some flexibility to do) or years (something the Rockies rarely do) to keep them at the table with the Phillies, Blue Jays and Red Sox all interested in Ruiz. Ruiz, 34, is viewed as a more realistic target for teams that don’t want to open the vault for Atlanta’s free agent catcher Brian McCann, who could land a $100-million contract. Ruiz is known for his game-calling — Phillies’ veteran pitchers have lobbied their front office to keep them — and solid offense. He owns a career .358 on-base percentage. He has allowed just nine passed balls over the past two seasons. That’s been a problem for the Rockies’ Wilin Rosario, who has permitted 30 in his first full two seasons.
