TEAMS: Philadelphia Phillies
This is the first part of a lengthy article series I will write in which I will analyze each member of the Phillies 40-man roster (plus some others), and how he fits into the Phillies plans of the future.
Carlos Ruiz just finished his fifth season as the Phillies’ full-time starting backstop, in what was his 12th season in the organization. Ruiz has quietly developed into one of the best all-around catchers in the game; he’s an offensive force, terrific behind the plate and adept at handling one of the game’s best pitching staffs. He’s been an unsung hero and a key part of a Phillies team that has now captured five consecutive NL East titles – Jayson Stark named Ruiz to his All-Underrated Team before this past season, typifying the type of player Ruiz is.
Ruiz set the stakes high for himself coming into the 2011 season, as he batted .302 with a .400 on-base percentage the year before. His numbers dropped off as expected, but he still finished with a very solid .283 batting average. ...

Might A Radical Trade Involving Cole Hamels & Matt Kemp Be The Answer?
I am a big Cole Hamels fan. He’s probably been the most consistent Phillies pitcher over the last 3 years, he’s the youngest ace, and he’s got an incredibly bright future. But…the Phillies are in win-right-now mode, as the core of Chase Utley, Ryan Howard, Shane Victornio, etc., only have a couple more [...]
Philadelphia Phillies Outright Brandon Moss and Pete Orr to Minor Leagues
The Philadelphia Phillies outrighted Brandon Moss and Pete Orr to the minor leagues, which means they were taken off the Phillies 40-man roster.
Moss hit 23 home runs last year in Triple-A Lehigh Valley and played five games in the big leagues with the Phillies. Orr began the year on the major-league roster and flip-flopped between the majors and Triple-A for much of the season.
Occupy Broad Street Descends on Philly as Fans Wonder Where World Series Is
Phila-HELL-phia. Occupy Broad Street taking hold.
PHILADELPHIA (Sportsman’s Daily Wire Service) Thousands of despondent and delusional Phillies fans have set up camp on Broad Street in South Philadelphia near Citizen’s Bank Park where they assumed the World Series would have started last night.
“Where are they?” wondered Bobby Cofski, holding a sign that read “UNCEREMONIOUS...
Dr. Strangeglove: There But For the Grace of God
I’ve been harping on how playoff baseball can hinge on luck, happenstance, and fractions of an inch for months now. It’s been roughly utility-neutral to us as Phillies fans in recent years (I hate to go all Jeremy Bentham on you guys, but that was the best way to put it), because while the Phillies, in 2011, lost in the first round of the playoffs despite probably being...
Fans That Don't Boo, Don't Deserve a Team!
Growing up a Philadelphia Phillies fan at Veteran's Stadium, I learned a valuable lesson. The importance of booing. Watching the introductions at Busch Stadium for game one of the World Series, I realized an important fact, the St Louis Cardinals should move their franchise... as should any other franchise where your fans are so passive that you hear clapping when the team'...
Hey, There is Still Baseball on TV!
It’s been two weeks since the Philadelphia Phillies were ousted from the 2011 postseason, when they were unceremoniously bounced by the St. Louis Cardinals, who are riding one of the greatest late season runs of the last decade.
Losing in the way that they did; that is, with Roy Halladay pitching one of the greatest games of his life and the offense – which never got...
Local Watching
The Phillies pulled in the highest percentage local TV audience during the regular season, but the Cardinals have dominated the post-season.
