Quite an interesting day for the Cubs new ace Carlos Silva. In the clip above, you see him hitting the world’s longest single, which for a big fella like Silva, is no big deal. As Lou says, “Look, he’s getting paid to pitch. He’s not used to running.” Certainly fair enough. However, if you look a little deeper into Paul Sullivan’s Trib column today, there may have been another reason Silva couldn’t get to second on what should have been a sure double.

Carlos Silva had a new and unusual approach to pitching Monday afternoon at PNC Park.

“I spent pretty much the whole game trying to throw up,” he said.

Cubs fans know the feeling well.

But in this case, Silva was suffering from the remnants of the stomach flu, which he fought through over the weekend in Houston.

Silva eventually accomplished his goal during the fifth inning and wound up with seven innings of four-hit ball in the Cubs' 6-1 win over the Pirates.

By “accomplished his goal”, I think we all understand that even jogging to first took it out of Silva enough for him to puke his guts out an inning and half later.

Which, in the blog post that follows this one, you may want to do as well if you’re a Cubs fan.

I know I spend a lot of time bashing the Cubs here for someone who purports to be such a fan, so once again I have got to hand it to GM Jim Hendry for acquiring the now 8-0 Silva for ultimate Clubhouse Cancer Milton Bradley. Can you just imagine how bad the Cubs would be right now if Hendry hadn’t made that trade? (tribune)
