KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The last memory of second baseman Jamey Carroll for most Royals fans was of him mopping up in the eighth inning of the Twins' 13-0 loss last week to the Royals at Kauffman Stadium. Carroll was effective, retiring the Royals in order. "With this bullpen and this staff, I don't think I'll be doing that again," Carroll said Monday afternoon after arriving in Kansas City to meet his new teammates. "That's the last thing we have to worry about, is me pitching again." Carroll, 39, obtained Sunday by the Royals for a player to be named later or cash considerations, more likely will be seen in more familiar positions, such as second base or shortstop. The plan for now is to platoon Carroll, a right-handed hitter, with Chris Getz, who was activated off the disabled list Monday. The Royals also sent infielder Irving Falu and left-hander Will Smith back to Triple-A Omaha. "He gives us a leadoff presence, too, against left-handers that we've been looking for," Manager Ned Yost said. Carroll has no preference -- he simply is looking forward to playing with a team in the thick of a playoff chase. "I think I will be playing some second and some short depending on the matchup," Carroll said. "I'm just grateful to have this opportunity. "(The trade) came as a shock to me (Sunday). I was caught off-guard but I'm really excited about it. It's all you ask for, to have an opportunity to play in the postseason." Judging from afar as a member of the Twins, Carroll said he is not surprised the Royals have suddenly taken off. "Absolutely, it's not a surprise," he says. "One reason is just looking at the pitching staff. This is a very strong pitching staff and it was just a matter of time before the offensive guys got some confidence and started to play. "Confidence goes a long way in this game." Asked what he thought he might bring to the Royals, Carroll said, "Well, hopefully some sort of experience for some of the guys. I'll do whatever I can and hopefully we'll be shaking hands a little more often than we were (in Minnesota)." Carroll becomes the oldest Royal on the roster, edging Miguel Tejada by three months. "It's funny but when I was 38 no one said a thing about my age," Carroll said. "I got to be 39 and now I'm old. I don't feel old and I made sure I shaved today so I wouldn't look old."
