Philadelphia Phillies Manger Charlie Manuel

I’ll start this by saying that there is now and always will be a soft spot for Charlie Manuel for me. It’s the same one that would be there for Andy Reid if he ever leads the Eagles to a Super Bowl win. It’s respect for someone who helped deliver something I waited an eternity for.

When this season started, we all knew that Charlie Manuel would have a huge challenge ahead of him to manage this Phillies team to success. So far, not all has gone to plan. In fact, nothing has gone to plan. Even the amazing defense and incredible pitching have stumbled this season. But it’s incomprehensible to think that Charlie Manuel could be held accountable for this disaster of a season when he’s had to go at it without 3 of the franchise’s best players, right?

Well… Maybe.

I’ve never gotten the feeling that Ruben Amaro and Charlie have a particularly warm and fuzzy relationship. I really didn’t get that feeling last year when Manuel was negotiating a contract extension. Amaro seemed to almost begrudgingly give Manuel the new contract and did so only because of the undisputed amount of success that Manuel has had in his time in Philadelphia.

There’s no doubt that Amaro felt some pressure to stick with Manuel after Manuel won a World Series, went to another and has presided over 5 division championships for the Phils, not to mention the fact that the Phillies were coming off a year in which they had the best record in baseball (2010).

There’s also no doubt that Charlie has cost the Phillies a couple of games this season with poor decisions. As great as Charlie Manuel is in the locker room, no one will accuse him of being Tony LaRussa on the field during games.

As much as you might think Manuel is untouchable because of the adversity he has faced injury wise this season, the Phillies may be staring at a completely new direction for this team. They may very well be sellers when the trade deadline arrives in seven weeks, and if there is a lot of de-construction, it wouldn’t be all that surprising to me if the Phillies choose to find a new manager as well.

Time will certainly tell on this, but all that you have to do is listen to a few minutes worth of sports talk radio to find out exactly how an increasing number of fans feel about the winningest manager in Phillies’ history. The Phillies as a franchise are under attack right now. The once rabid fan base is turning apathetic. That sell out streak is no longer a “gimme.”

Things always change. In sports they change even quicker. It’s getting hot around here, and I am pretty certain Charlie Manuel feels the heat too.
