The agent for infielder Eric Chavez spoke with Jerry Crasnick of ESPN and told him that he hasn’t decided whether or not he will retire and would strongly consider returning to the Yankees if he returns (link).
Chavez, who turns 34 in December, had just a .320 OBP with a .676 OPS in 58 games with the Yankees. It was a disappointing season especially considering how much time he spent on the DL with a foot injury.
Still, for a bench piece that isn’t terrible. There is upside still there if he can stay healthy (he hasn’t played a full season since 2005). If he decides to return to the Bronx, the Yankees would likely offer him a contract similar to the one they gave him last year ($1.5 base plus up to $4 million based on time on the roster). However, if he decides not to return they potentially have a replacement in prospect Brandon Laird.
