Gio Gonzalez earned his second win of the season last night, tossing six shutout innings while allowing just two hits and striking out six. By every measurable account, the decision to acquire the hard throwing left-hander via trade has been a smashing success thus far. While he's only four starts into the season, you could make a reasonable argument that he's been the team's best starter through the first four weeks of the year. After a poor first outing against the Chicago Cubs April 7, he has pitched 20 scoreless innings over his last three starts, and has allowed just six hits in that stretch. While it's still early to measure, early on it seems the trade has been a pretty successful move for the Oakland Athletics as well, who received four of the Nats top 10 prospects in return for the All-Star hurler. Let's take a look at what those prospects have done so far: Tommy Milone: Milone is the only member of this trade to currently be playing for the MLB Athlet...

Jose Canseco's Twitter account returns after brief disappearance

Fans of the crazy people who have Twitter accounts were left in disbelief and a state of mourning Tuesday when it became apparent that the high comedy that is Jose Canseco‘s Twitter feed mysteriously no longer existed. But worry not, folks. After approximately three hours off the grid — a time during which the Internet felt so empty — Canseco’s account was back up and running...

Oakland's offseason acquisitions are off to strong starts

The Oakland A's aren't feeling too badly about those deals they made in the offseason. Tommy Milone, picked up in the Gio Gonzalez trade with the Washington Nationals, is 3-1 with a 2.00 ERA. Ryan Cook, acquired in the Trevor Cahill deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks, is the A's top right-handed set-up man and he has not allowed a run this season. On Wednesday, the...

Athletics 2, White Sox 0

Pinch-hitter Kurt Suzuki doubled in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning, Tommy Milone outdueled Gavin Floyd and the Oakland Athletics beat the Chicago White Sox 2-0 on Tuesday night. Daric Barton drew a leadoff walk in the eighth and Luke Hughes struck out before Matt Thornton relieved Floyd (1-3). Suzuki doubled to left and Barton scored easily, then Eric Sogard added an RBI...

Hideki Matsui might be heading back to the AL East. The former Yankees slugger is close to signing a minor-league contract with the Tampa Bay Rays, according to the YES Network's Jack Curry. Matsui has played the last two years on the West Coast, one with the Angels and one with the Oakland A's. The 38-year-old outfielder hit .251 last year for Oakland with 12 home runs while...

Nationals 3, Padres 1

Gio Gonzalez ran his scoreless innings streak to 20 over three starts and the NL East-leading Washington Nationals beat the San Diego Padres 3-1 on Tuesday night on just four hits at spacious Petco Park. Chad Tracy, pinch-hitting for Gonzalez, hit a two-run single with one out in the seventh to chase Clayton Richard. San Diego, last in the NL West, was trying for its first three...

Nationals Pitching Somehow Gets Even Better As They Win NL Best 13th Game

The Washington Nationals beat the San Diego Padres 3-1 on Tuesday night, and the team improved to 13-4 on the season. The common theme continued to be remarkable pitching. Gio Gonzalez spun another gem: six innings, no runs, two hits, six Ks, two walks. The only reason Gonzalez was pulled after six was because he came up in the batting order, and the team needed runs desperately...

Nationals-Padres Preview

The Washington Nationals are bringing their impressive ERA and penchant for winning close games to the West Coast. They'll send Gio Gonzalez to the mound in the opener of a three-game set against the San Diego Padres on Tuesday night. Washington (12-4) will play its first six games against NL West opponents on this trip, moving on to face the Dodgers on Friday. The Nationals...

Daily Friar 4.25.12

The Padres couldn't extend their 2 game winning streak to 3 last night. After a pitchers duel between Clayton Richard and Gio Gonzalez ended in Richard throwing one too many pitches. The homplate umpire was of no help last night either. Calling a balk on Richard that the first base umpire didn't even call. Then calling a ball way off the plate a strike to get Cameron Maybin...
