The Chicago White Sox had won eight of their last nine games and things were looking up. But then the road trip happened. Since heading into Boston on August 30th, the Sox have dropped seven in a row. Poor run support is mostly to blame, but a few mediocre pitching performances did not help the cause. Only Chris Sale, rookie Erik Johnson, and Jose Quintana have turned in quality starts in the Sox’ last seven games. The White Sox have decided to go with a 6-man rotation to finish out the season. This is a smart move because it allows them to further evaluate the aforementioned Erik Johnson and other options at starting pitcher. Johnson has had success across two minor league levels this season. He was considered Chicago’s top pitching prospect at the start of the year. Not everyone is at fault for the Sox offensive struggles. Avisail Garcia and Dayan Viciedo have put up respectable numbers as the rest of the team has faltered. Viciedo, however, has sat three games of this road trip with no apparent injury. Over the last two weeks, Viciedo has put up eight runs and a .387 average, and Garcia has been red hot, hitting .356 with seven runs, two homers, and eight runs batted in. As a team since August 30th, the Sox are batting just .211. The White Sox will look to end the streak tonight in Baltimore as John Danks tries to rebound after getting rocked in his last outing against Boston. Danks held the Orioles to just two runs over seven innings in their last meeting back in July. On the opposition, Baltimore will send out Scott Feldman. Feldman has a 1.87 ERA in his last four starts. Baltimore is currently three games back of a Wild Card position. Chicago will wrap up their road trip this weekend as they finish up their four game series with Baltimore. Hector Santiago and Anthony Rienzo are expected to start for the Sox. Bruce Chen and Bud Norris are expected to start for the Orioles.
