For the first time in 24 years, the Chicago White Sox will finish in last place in the AL Central. Currently holding the third worst record in baseball, the Sox will finish the season at home with four games against the Kansas City Royals. I guess you could call 2013 a rebuilding year for the White Sox when we look back a few years from now. On the positive side, the Sox dumped a lot of salary at this year’s deadline by dealing Alex Rios, Jake Peavy, and others. You can read more about these deals in my acquisition breakdown. In addition to the salary relief, acquired prospect Avisail Garcia has shown a lot of promise at the plate and as a fielder. With the playoffs well out of reach, the White Sox played it smart by promoting some of their young prospects. Going into next season, the major league experience that Erik Johnson earned may put him on the fast track to be the 5th starter. Another bright side of having a terrible season is picking very high in next year’s MLB draft. With some very good pitchers, and one speedy shortstop expected to be at the top of the draft, it’s hard to imagine the Sox screwing this one up. Follow isportsweb on twitter A few questions still remain going into the offseason. First and foremost, we’re still waiting on a statement from Paul Konerko. Konerko said he plans to take some time to figure things out, and I believe him. So while we wait on that one, we will also be wondering about the future of manager Robin Ventura. Ventura is just a year removed from being a finalist for AL Manager of the Year. But after enduring the worst White Sox season since 1989, his future with the team may be in jeopardy. I think Ventura deserves another season before the team moves on. After all, it’s not entirely his fault. I put the blame mostly on the front office for poor free agent acquisitions, contracts, and deadline trades in recent years.
