Dom D's Mets Fan Blog:
Church Factor:
The seemingly endless Ryan Church saga took a positive turn yesterday when he made his first game appearance of any kind in nearly six weeks.
Serving as the designated hitter, Church went 1-for-3 with an RBI single against the Cardinals' Gulf Coast League affiliate in Florida. He will play DH again today if he shows no symptoms of the post-concussion syndrome that plagued him throughout June.
If all goes well, Church will start playing in right field as part of his minor-league rehab assignment by next week and could return to the Mets by the end of the month.
Billy Notes:
The Mets changed course yesterday and announced that closer Billy Wagner will join them in Pittsburgh today for a simulated game before coming off the DL on Monday.
Wagner, who tossed a scoreless inning Thursday for Double-A Binghamton, was supposed to make a minor-league rehab appearance this weekend with Single-A Brooklyn, but interim manager Jerry Manuel said pitching coach Dan Warthen wanted to see Wagner throw in person.
