Bathroom-scale3Clay Buchholz might have gotten a bad reputation last year due to his association with Messrs. Lester, Lackey, and Beckett in the video-game-playing, beer-drinking culture that developed. But if the early parts of spring training are any indication, Buchholz has turned over a new leaf.

WEEI's Rob Bradford reports that Buchholz has dropped almost 15 lbs., down to 184.

“The weight came off so easy that it felt like it almost needed to come off,” Buchholz said Tuesday morning. “I feel better now just being able to move around. I feel lighter on my feet than I did last year, all year. It came off quick in a month. That’s sort of why I don’t mind it.”

As Bradford points out, back issues and extra weight aren't a good combination -- just ask Bobby Jenks. That said, we see these stories every year. Everybody is always in the best shape of their life. I've seen similar proclamations about Jim Thome's 75-year-old body, and Jed Lowrie, who has roughly a 0.00001% chance of playing more than 150 games in Houston.

But let's hope the weight loss is a good sign for Clay. He's already got his money, so the motivation must be performance, driven from within. Now let's see if his body can hold up to the wear and tear of 200 innings.

Just try keeping up with Bobby V.

It's 15 minutes into Bobby Valentine's first official workout as the Boston Red Sox's manager, and I'm already exhausted. I'm just a writer following Valentine'...

Let the Competition Begin: Boston Red Sox Audition Starters

It was a strange off-season for the Boston Red Sox. After their heartbreaking September collapse, the Red Sox parted ways with manager Terry Francona and GM Theo Epstein. Closer Jonathan Papelbon got a ridiculous deal 5 year deal from the Philadelphia Phillies and New Red Sox GM Ben Cherington dealt a few young players to rebuild the bullpen and sure up their one positional weakness...

I think Tito is doing ok for himself

Busted Coverage has the "story" of Terry Francona's twenty-something girlfriend, Vanessa. It's safe to say Tito is enjoying life outside the Red Sox clubhouse.

So We Were Duped On The Terry Francona Girlfriend Story

Yep, we were duped yesterday on the Terry Francona story. I’ve been at this gig since October 2007 and yesterday’s story, based on what we now know is a phony tipster, is the first time in the history of BC that we were deceived to such a level. I reported that the photos that were sent to us were ‘allegedly’ Terry’s girlfriend. Nope. Then we were sent...

Chris Carpenter Brings Power Arm to Boston, Could Be Option Out of Red Sox Bullpen

FORT MYERS, Fla. – It lasted 50 days longer than Kim Kardashian's marriage to Kris Humphries. It lasted long enough for the Red Sox to lose their cornerstone closer and add another franchise closer. But after 122 days of negotiations, the Red Sox and Cubs settled the compensation issue surrounding Theo Epstein's exit. The Red Sox received Chris Carpenter -- no, not the...

Cubs fan buys Red Sox domain

Although the Theo Epstein compensation has finally come to a resolution, the Boston Red Sox have another headache from the Chicago Cubs on their hands. A Cubs fan bought the domain name to Boston’s new spring training park, JetBlue Park at Fenway South. Eric Engelman is a Fort Myers resident and life long Cubs fan. After seeing the naming rights story on the local news,...

Cubs send pitcher to Red Sox as comp for Epstein

Theo Epstein's value to the Boston Red Sox was easy to gauge. A quick glance at the two World Series trophies at Fenway Park settles that.

Crawford not ruling out return by Opening Day

At Spring Training three days early, Carl Crawford isn't sure when he'll be cleared to hit. Recovering from left wrist surgery in January, the Red Sox's left fielder -- coming off a rough first year in Boston -- refuses to rule out an Opening Day return.

Old wounds

FORT MYERS, Fla. - John Henry probably shouldn’t have said it so openly and honestly because Carl Crawford reacted to the Red Sox owner’s offseason comments that he did not favor signing him with hurt and disappointment yesterday.

Lefthander wants to do right things

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Jon Lester is a two-time All-Star, a World Series champion, and has a no-hitter on his résumé. By any measure, he is one of the best starting pitchers in the game.

Big Papi now Red Sox elder statesman

For a few fleeting moments during the offseason, David Ortiz contemplated the unthinkable.
