Tampa Bay Rays right-hander Alex Cobb was confident a slight mechanical adjustment would get him back on track after a brutal start Saturday in Anaheim, when he allowed 12 runs on eight hits while not lasting three innings.

He turned out to be better than ever Thursday.

Cobb dazzled the Oakland A's, throwing a four-hitter for the first shutout of his pro career. It was his second complete game, both coming this year.

"For Alex to come back from his last start and pitch like he did tonight it is really brilliant," Rays right fielder Matt Joyce said. "It was a case of him coming in and putting the team on his shoulders. He really pitched a brilliant game. I was really happy for him."

Cobb said as soon as he walked off the mound Saturday, he started looking forward to Thursday.

"There was an excitement all week," he said. "I am really happy I felt that way towards it, instead of being scared and afraid of being hit around again. I was really happy with how I wanted to get the ball again. Just go back out there and compete and get a 'W.'"

Cobb struck out eight and walked two. He threw 113 pitches, matching his season high.
