Oakland A's reliever Ryan Cook has been removed from the closer's role, at least temporarily, by manager Bob Melvin.
Melvin said he wanted to get the rookie some work in lower-pressure situations.
Cook has converted just two of his last six save opportunities, and 12 of 19 for the season.
Melvin was reluctant to name a new closer, saying the team has ''a couple different options,'' including relievers who have helped close games this year.
Right-hander Grant Balfour is the only other Oakland pitcher with multiple saves. He went 7 for 9 in save opportunities before losing his job in May.
BEST OF MAXIM
After a rough few weeks as closer, Oakland rookie Ryan Closer is out of the job, at least for a time. Cook, an All-Star, had blown four saves in his previous eight outings -- and he allowed nine runs in eight innings in that stretch. On Saturday, A's manager Bob Melvin said Cook's next appearance or two will be in less high-pressure situations. Melvin said he would like...
Brandon Inge: The picture of effort(Photo: USATODAY.com)
Brandon Inge and the Oakland A’s are in a playoff race, and efforts shown by Inge on a daily basis are a major factor in why the underdog Athletics team are hanging around. As the A’s were in Chicago to take on the White Sox Saturday night, Brandon Inge dislocated his shoulder in the bottom of the seventh inning by making...
The Oakland Athletics have placed third baseman Brandon Inge on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained right shoulder.
The A's recalled Josh Donaldson from Triple-A Sacramento and put him in the starting lineup at third base on Tuesday night at Kansas City.
Inge was hitting .216 with 12 home runs and 52 RBI before getting hurt Saturday in Chicago. This is his third time on...
Athletics third baseman Brandon Inge will travel back to Oakland to have an MRI on his dislocated right shoulder.
A's manager Bob Melvin announced the plan for Inge after Sunday's 7-3 loss to the Chicago White Sox.
Inge was hurt Saturday on a diving stop in the seventh inning. He remained in the game and started a double play two batters later. Inge then drove in the go...
Despite dislocating his left shoulder, Oakland Athletics infielder Brandon Inge stayed in Saturday night's game and hit a go-ahead single in the eighth inning as the A's beat the host Chicago White Sox 9-7. Inge, who said in USA Today that he has dislocated the shoulder "16, 17" times, popped it out while diving for a ground ball in the seventh inning. One inning...
The Oakland Athletics have reinstated starter Brandon McCarthy from the 15-day disabled list and placed infielder Eric Sogard on it with a strained back, retroactive to Tuesday.
McCarthy was scheduled to start Friday night's game against the Chicago White Sox. He has not started since June 19 due to a strained right shoulder. McCarthy is 6-3 with a 2.54 ERA in 12 games this...
Jonny Gomes homered to tie the game, and Brandon Inge hit a go-ahead single as the Oakland Athletics scored twice in the eighth inning and beat the Chicago White Sox 9-7 on Saturday night.
Oakland had a five-run third and led 5-2, but the White Sox rallied and took a 7-6 lead in the seventh on A.J. Pierzynski's RBI single off Ryan Cook (5-2).
After Gomes homered off Matt Thornton...
With an eye toward keeping their young pitchers fresh for the stretch drive, the A's are having left-
handed Travis Blackley make a spot start on Saturday at Chicago and pushing back rookies Jarrod Parker and
Tommy Milone, and also right-hander Dan Straily, who came up just a week ago. Blackley, relegated to the bullpen when Straily joined the club, did good work when in...
Cliff Pennington of the Oakland A’s hit a ball to the right-center gap at U.S Cellular field that caused some confusion on the part of the umpires calling the game.
The line drive came with bases loaded in the top of the seventh inning in a 6-6 game. Pennington laced a drive to past center fielder Alejandro De Aza that appeared to disappear right before our eyes. After closer examination...

The other day I got an email saying I have a financial windfall coming to me from a deceased relative in Nigerian that I didn’t know. So I don’t even need to be doling out fantasy advice anymore. Take the thirty-seven cents I made yesterday from this site and shove it! I don’t need any of youse. I got dead Nigerian uncles! But, just in case, my Nigerian uncle’s...
