About a year ago at this time, the Mets were going hard and heavy after David Eckstein.
Eventually, we gave up on him and opted to give Luis Castillo a four-year contract worth $24 million dollars.
As you all know, last week the Mets signed Alex Cora as a backup infielder for $2 million dollars.
Today, the Padres agreed to a contract with David Eckstein for one year at $850,000 dollars.
Now is it me, or is something wrong with that picture?
Cora played in 75 games with the Red Sox last season and is a career .245 hitter with 33 stolen bases and a .313 OBP.
Eckstein played in 94 games last season and is a career .285 hitter with 112 stolen bases and a .351 OBP.
They both played shortstop and second base last season, and Eckstein is by far a much more superior fielder in fielding percentage and range.
Funny thing... Cora has played just one more game than Eckstein in his career so they are basically even. Eckstein has turned 627 double plays, and Cora 580.
It's probably not a b...
