The Toronto Blue Jays acquired Aledmys Diaz from the St. Louis Cardinals this offseason. Diaz was very good his rookie season in St. Louis, and even made the NL All-Star team, but he was pretty terrible in 2017. In fact, he was even sent to the minors for a portion of the season. The Jays bought low on Diaz, hoping that he could potentially revive his career north of the border.

In 2017, Diaz hit .300 for the Cardinals and smacked 17 home runs. That was very good offensive production from a primarily defensive position. The Jays picked up Diaz hoping he could return to this form. This was a low-risk, high-reward play from the Jays because if he is bad then they lost a little money for his salary and a decent enough prospect, but if he is good, they could have a .300 hitter on their hands.

Troy Tulowitzki is currently the starting shortstop for the Toronto Blue Jays, and he will not be moved off of his position. Diaz does have a fighting chance of being the starting second baseman for the Jays coming out of Spring Training however. With a strong spring, Diaz could be the starting second baseman for the Jays on Opening Day. The Jays are probably hoping for this to be the case since they traded for him, and have also had somewhat of a black hole at the position for some time now.

Coming out of Spring Training, the Jays could potentially sport an infield featuring Justin Smoak, Aledmys Diaz, Troy Tulowitzki, and Josh Donaldson. That would be one of the better infields in baseball if all four of those guys play up to their potential. The Jays currently do not look like they are going to be contenders in the AL East, but if their infield plays well, they could make a run.
