MINNEAPOLIS A Thursday MRI revealed that Twins rookie starting pitcher Cole De Vries cracked a rib in his Saturday start against Cleveland after being hit by a line drive. He will miss the rest of the season.De Vries pitched six scoreless innings on Saturday, giving up just three hits, and he attempted to pitch through the injury before coming out of the game. He said that he felt almost relieved at the diagnosis after wondering why what he originally thought was only a bruise would not heal. "Now I know that there was something wrong," De Vries said. "Before I was just kind of going around blind. I was wondering why it was continuing to hurt so bad It's unfortunate. I wish it didn't happen. But there's a little relief."On the season, De Vries had a 5-5 record with a 4.11 ERA and was one of the Twins'pleasant surprises. "Cole has done a nice job. A really nice job," said Twins manager Ron Gardenhire. "I would have liked to see him finish out the season, but unfortunately he got hurt. "Yeah, he'll go on to spring training, and he'll be one of the guys we'll be looking at absolutely," Gardenhire added. "He's done enough to deserve it."Ryan Doumit strained a muscle in his ribcage on Wednesday night, and he will sit on Thursday against the Royals. With Joe Mauer still out with back spasms, Drew Butera will start at catcher and third baseman Eduardo Escobar will serve as the team's backup. Escobar has been the third catcher with the White Sox, so he does have some catching experience.Follow Joan Niesen on Twitter.
