The Pirates played a terrible game all around and dropped their second in a row to the Orioles, this time by a 7-1 blowout score.

Kevin Corriea was bad: 6 innings, 10 hits, 5 runs (4 earned), only 1 strikeout, 1 walk, and 1 homer. We’ve seen him get away with some mediocre outings that could have been a lot worse lately, but that wasn’t the case today. Baltimore took advantage of a poor effort from the Bucs’ SP for the second straight night and took control of the game early.

The O’s started Jake Arrieta in place of the injured Brian Matusz, and before the game Pirates fans probably saw that as a good thing. Arrieta came in with a 2-8 record and a 6.32 ERA. He had lost his last four starts and last six decisions. But, as we see so often when the Bucs face a pitcher they should be able to make noise against, Arrieta found himself. He struck out a career-high 9 batters in 7 innings, and danced around two bases-loaded threats to allow just one run.

Horrible night for the offense. Alex Presley and Casey McGehee stayed hot with two hits apiece, and Jose Tabata added two as well, but the other six batters notched a total of two singles and one walk. Awful.

Tony Watson allowed two more runs out of the bullpen…on a Chris Davis broken bat home run. The bat sailed into the O’s dugout, sending his teammates ducking, while he rounded the bases for a dinger. That’s just the kind of game it was.

Meanwhile, the Reds defeated the Indians again to increase their lead in the division to two games.

It’s not the end of the world to see the Bucs lose two in a row – on the road – against a good team – with their two worst starting pitchers – but this one was ugly. The offense was my major beef tonight, but still…let’s hope Jeff Karstens and Charlie Morton will be back soon, because it’s awfully hard to imagine Kevin Correia and Brad Lincoln getting it done at the back of the rotation, and it doesn’t sound like the Pirates have any intention of calling up Rudy Owens soon.

Orioles 7, Pirates 1 / Box / 2012 Record: 32-29 / Next: Thursday, at Orioles, 7:05

MVP: McGehee (+.089) / LVP: Correia (-.200) / Key play: Davis’ 1st inning double
