Another Cubs Blog:
I didn’t see but the tail end of this game. Marshall allowed 3 runs in the 1st and then settled down and shut the Giants down until the 8th. He allowed 2 quick hits to open the 8th and Lou, clearly not interested in winning this game, brought in the team’s worst reliever who gave up about 35 hits and retired one batter. Neal Cotts replaced Samardzija with the bases loaded and one out and he got a 1-2-3 double play, but the score had gone from 3-2 to 6-2. Marshall’s final line is 7 innings and 5 runs allowed, but it was a better start than that.
Lou ran out a lineup that had little chance of winning today. Marmol and Gregg were unavailable even if they did have a lead late. If you’re going to rest most of your starters you may as well do it in a game as lopsided as today’s.
