Another Cubs Blog:
Randy Wells, simply put, is a ******* meast. Wells tossed 7.1 innings, scattering 6 hits, and allowing just 1 ER and 2 BB, while K’ing 5. He was, as he has been for all but 3 of his 12 starts, very sharp, as was the Cub defense behind him.
The offense looked primed to have another explosion, plating 3 runs in the top of the 2nd via a long Mike Fontenot HR (which pencil-dicked Cincy broadcaster Thom Brennaman inexplicably informed us would not have been out of the park in San Francisco), but Aaron Harang settled in, started giving the Cub hitters a steady diet of breaking balls, at which they all too happy to swing.
And miss.
An 8th inning double Lee, driving in Fukudome, tacked on the insurance run.
The bullpen was uneven, as they are wont to be. Grabow looked good in inducing an inning ending DP to close out the 8th, but El Caminante looked terrible in earning his 4th save of the season. He hung sliders, failed to control his fastball, and looked completely exhausted after a 36 pitch relief outing in which he threw just 23 strikes. 12 of his first 15 pitches were balls. The bullpen is in complete disarray, folks.
Sloth Tom Gorzelanny takes on a struggling Johnny Cueto. Here’s hoping the Cubs can lock up a series win.
