As the Cubs continue to look for pitching depth and pick players off of the scrap heap, they killed two birds with one stone in their signing of Manny Corpas.
According to ESPN Chicago’s Bruce Levine, the Cubs agreed to a one-year deal with the 29-year-old reliever, formerly of the Colorado Rockies. Tommy John surgery has kept him out of baseball since the 2010 season.
The Texas Rangers had signed him to a minor league deal back in April, but he was unable to pitch at all in 2011. Corpas was also being pursued by the New York Yankees this winter.
Corpas has shown flashes of being a very good reliever in his career, with his best season with the Rockies coming back in 2007. Corpas posted a 2.08 ERA and 19 saves as the Rockies went on that run to the World Series that they eventually lost to the Boston Red Sox.
