The Cubs caught a glimpse of Pedro Strop in the closer role Saturday as he struck out the side in the ninth inning to preserve a 3-1 victory over the Braves at Wrigley Field.
A day after veteran closer Kevin Gregg complained about his initial perception of Cubs management's lack of respect for him Strop complimented Gregg for helping him develop.
"We have been teammates before" Strop said. "When I first got to the Orioles he was one of the only guys … he helped me a lot. Like how to set a routine and how to pitch around certain guys. He has been helping me a lot (here) just like he used to."
Before Saturday's game the Cubs announced President Theo Epstein had decided not to release Gregg because of after Gregg's criticism Friday. Gregg had apologized to Epstein and manager Dale Sveum.
