MLB Injury News:
A large gash in his left knee will keep Darwin Barney out on Opening Day for the Cubs. The second baseman suffered the injury on Saturday. He was attempting a sliding catch of a foul ball and cut his knee open. The gash required five stitches and will require some down time before Barney can play says Gordon Whittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times.
Barney out for opener at least after gashing knee (5 stitches) on sliding catch try in foul territory. Doc to decided on DL next day or 2.

Barney has been one of the more streaky players on the Cubs' roster. At times he looks like he can combine with Starlin Castro to make a fantastic middle infield for years to come. But at other times, he looks like he should be sent to the minors. Regardless, the Cubs need him now as they rebuild and try to do things the right way going forward.
Barney is entering his fourth season in the Majors. In his career, he has hit .263/.305/.349. He was a Gold Glover last season and he was seventh in Rookie of the Year voting in 2011. Barney's bat will never be his strong suit, but if he continue to be a whiz with the glove, he should be a part of the Cubs for many years.

Even though the trade took place a year ago, fans still clamor for Tyler Colvin who was sent to the Colorado Rockies along with DJ LeMahieu for Ian Stewart. With the way Stewart performed here for the first half of the season before landing on the disabled list, and how well Colvin and LeMahieu performed last season, one would have a hard time arguing that this trade was a win for...
The windows are opened. The air is warm. The last Spring Training Cubs game is set to go on my tablet. It’s almost time to hear Pat Hughes call out ”Chicago Cubs Baseball is ON THE AIR”… for real. The long winter and even longer spring training is almost over.

“Now we play games that mean something. It’s time to go.” – A.J. Burnett
A.J. Burnett for the first time in his career will take the mound on Opening Day. He went 2-1 with a 1.40 ERA in three...
The easiest and probably most accurate way to describe the Pirates' 3-1 loss to the Cubs on Opening Day at PNC Park is probably this: it was cold out and when it's cold out, hard-throwing pitchers seem to do well, and as a result AJ Burnett and Jeff Samardzija combined for 19 strikeouts between them in just 13 2/3 innings combined work.
Burnett was particularly awesome...
Final: Cubs 3, Pirates 1 (box)
WP: Jeff Samardzija (1-0, 0.00 ERA)
LP: A.J. Burnett (0-1, 4.76 ERA)
SV: Kyuji Fujikawa (1, 0.00 ERA)
A.J. Burnett struck out ten batters in his first career Opening Day start, but it wasn’t enough as the Cubs scored two runs in the first inning on an Anthony Rizzo home run and led the rest of the way.
Cubs starter Jeff Samardzija gave up just two...
