The Chicago Cubs dealt starting pitcher Scott Feldman to the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday and traded former All-Star Carlos Marmol to the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for veteran reliever Matt Guerrier. The Cubs got right-handed pitchers Jake Arrieta and Pedro Strop as well as two international signing bonus slots from the Orioles in exchange for Feldman and catcher Steve Clevenger. Feldman signed a one-year contract with the Cubs and went 7-6 with a 3.46 ERA in 15 starts this season. He is 46-50 with a 4.66 ERA in 219 major league games over nine seasons. Arrieta is 20-25 with a 5.46 ERA over the last four seasons with Baltimore (2010-13). Strop was 5-2 with three saves, 24 holds and a 2.44 ERA last season as the primary setup man for the Orioles. He has battled a back strain this year, going 0-3 with a 7.25 ERA. Arrieta will be assigned to Triple-A Iowa while Strop is expected to report to the Cubs later this week. Guerrier is 25-33 with six saves and a 3.54 ERA over 10 seasons in the major leagues. He went 2-3 with a 4.80 ERA this season before being designated for assignment by the Dodgers on Sunday. The Cubs designated Marmol for assignment last week after he had gone 2-4 with two saves and a 5.86 ERA in 31 appearances, striking out 32 while walking 21 batters. An All-Star as a setup man in 2008, Marmol's best year as closer was 2010, when he had 38 saves in 43 chances along with 138 strikeouts and 52 walks. But fans had been booing him and management was eager to cut a deal with the Dodgers, who also acquired an international signing bonus slot. The Cubs also said they had acquired two international signing bonus slots from the Houston Astros for minor league infielder Ronald Torreyes, who batted .260 with two home runs and 25 RBI in 64 games with Double-A Tennessee this season. He was originally acquired by the Cubs with left-handed pitcher Travis Wood and outfielder Dave Sappelt from Cincinnati for left-handed pitcher Sean Marshall in 2011.

Dodgers finalize trade for Carlos Marmol, staff does think they can fix him

While I was sleeping yesterday (of course), the Dodgers did indeed finalize a trade with the Cubs for right-handed reliever Carlos Marmol, cash, and international bonus pool money for Matt Guerrier. I didn’t write about it immediately because I figured my article on why he might be of interest to the Dodgers was sufficient. Plus, the breakdown of the details was a bit confusing...

And the trade season is officially here. We have our first significant trade of the year on July 2nd, and the timing of this move is not a coincidence. First, the details, per Keith Law. Fallout of the Carlos Marmol trade

Yesterday Carlos Marmol was placed on outright waivers. The move was purely procedural as the Dodgers were already planning on sending Marmol to the minors in hopes of him being able to work out his struggles there. Marmol has cleared waivers and accepted his assignment to Triple-A. The Dodgers were already willing to cut their losses with Marmol before the trade went down. Peter...

LA Kings mascot cautions Dodgers against Carlos Marmol trade

A report on Monday said the Los Angeles Dodgers were closing in on a trade for Carlos Marmol, whom the Chicago Cubs designated for assignment last week. Marmol has been pretty bad this season — and the last two for that matter — so many were wondering why the Dodgers would want him. He is [...]

Carlos Marmol designated for assignment by Dodgers

Well I hope Carlos Marmol enjoyed his time with the Dodgers. He was just acquired by the Dodgers in a trade and about 21 hours later, he is no longer a member of the club. The Dodgers, in a shocking move, designated Carlos Marmol for assignment, according to Peter Gammons of MLB Network. Turns out the Dodgers only wanted the Int'l cap $, as they designated Marmol for aassignment...

Chicago Cubs actually get something for Carlos Marmol! LOL at L.A. Dodgers

The Chicago Cubs today acquired pitcher Matt Guerrier from the LA Dodgers in exchange for local punchline Carlos Marmol. Yes, somebody actually gave up something for Carlos Marmol. I’m laughing as hard at the Dodgers as you are. Carlos Marmol was perhaps the worst closer ever in Cubs history; and this is a franchise with a history of bad closers. Los Angeles also acquired something...

O’s Betting on Another Texan Cast-off (sort of)

Photo credit: stokedisrad Since 2011, the Orioles have acquired Chris Davis, Tommy Hunter, Pedro Strop and Taylor Teagarden from the Texas Rangers. In using Strop to acquire Scott Feldman, who pitched in Arlington from 2005-2012, the O’s are betting on another player the Texas Rangers really didn’t want—he was simply a free agent signee of the Cubs last offseason. In 2013,...
